The Caverns Surrounding Duskhill

Though well hidden, the Duskhill Estate is still surrounded by an intricate and linking system of caverns of various sizes, some of which have steep drop-off's, running water, and walls softly illuminated by glowing lichen.  Creatures that have never seen the light of the above worlde dwell in some of the deepest shadows of the caverns, hunting prey only when it wanders into their territory.  Aside from the creatures both great and small which eke out their living in the Underneath, the cave systems are mostly unoccupied except for a growing and unwanted goblin population, slowly encroaching on Duskhill and disrupting the otherwise peaceful existence of the creatures who live side-by-side in the Underneath.

Faction of the Right-Side Hand

(Forward Encampment)

The Faction of the Right-Side Hand is breakaway faction of the original Left-Hand Foot Goblin Clan.  They are far more aggressive than the relatively peaceful Left-Hand Foot clan and are currently on a campaign to stake their claim to all of the Caverns in the area, including the Hidden Estate at Duskhill. They've set up three camps, with the Forward Encampment acting to scout out various caverns and clear them out to prepare them for the arrival of the other two, slower moving encampments.  As such it is a much smaller encampment, but is comprised of the goblin equivelent of "warriors".

TOM CAT

A Felonious Feline

╺ ✽ ╸

[OOC: From the Hidden Estate at Duskhill]

Tom-Cat lounged on a ridge overlooking the forward encampment of The Right-Left Foot goblin clan.  He’d been there most of the afternoon, studying the comings and goings of the mean little umanoids as they ate, fought amongst themselves, and generally made a ruckus in the camp below him.  He understood only a little bit of goblinese (goblinoid?), but from what he could tell from the stance and movement of the ones below him, these goblins were all “warriors” - this term he used very loosely.  They were undisciplined but muscled, more like enforcers or thugs sent to clear out the riff-raff loitering in a tavern at the end of a night, rather than any sort of truly organized fighting force.  The Halfings of Kiana were far better trained than they were, and Tom-Cat could probably have gone toe-to-toe with one or two of the Home Guard, had he needed to.

Regardless of training, it didn’t mean that rushing straight into a goblin encampment was a smart move.  So Tom-Cat waited and watched, his tail flicking to a fro as he patiently observed, information filtering through his mind as his keen eyes swept over the bodies milling about.   From what he’d been able to gather, the encampment was a smaller forward force whose utility was in sweeping through an area and clearing it out of any hostiles.  They’d been fairly successful in that regard, for they’d managed to push this close to Duskhill, although his sensitive ears were able to pick up snatches of conversation here and there about a large creature that had been dogging them and giving them trouble here and there.  His limited understanding of their language didn’t allow him much information regarding the creature, but from what he did understand, it was something called a “Sun Stealer”.  The only other words he could discern describing it were, “shadow”, “large”, “teeth” and “claws”.

He wasn’t overly concerned about it for now.  If he happened to glimpse it, maybe he’d lead it right into the main force of goblins, located deeper into the cave system.  Maybe.  He’d been restless back at the estate and his emotions were not his own (or so it felt), and he needed to expel some of his agitated energy coiled within him.  He still couldn’t get the Aeros girl out of his mind, bothered beyond reason by her fear and treatment of him.  He knew that it’d been unkind to ignore her outright during breakfast and only pay attention to Myrae, especially considering their dislike of one another, but he’d been able to justify it by telling himself he’d only given her what she wanted.  It was clear that his presence caused her more distress than comfort, galling as that was to admit, and...it hurt.  It was stupid and it shouldn’t, but that was the truth.  It hurt him that she was so scared of him.

And the fact that he even felt that way, just fed into a merciless feedback loop of self-loathing, irrationality, and anger.  He’d stay away from her if it helped to lessen her distress, but it didn’t mean he had to be happy or necessarily nice about it, right? A small voice in the back of his head answered otherwise; he ignored it.

╺ ✽ ╸

The encampment below him was still and quiet.  The large fire pit in the middle of the camp had settled from a blazing roar into a crackling flicker, with only one or two goblins snoozing by the embers.  There were ten tents in total, arranged into a square formation, with about ten goblins per tent.  No prrroblem.

It was obvious that the goblins only expected a brute force, full frontal type of attack, and therefore only had four guards posted - one at each side of the square layout.  They were definitely not expecting a single opponent, let alone an assassin.  The guards were barely patrolling; two were actually sleeping on the job.

Tom-Cat stood on the ridge and stripped off his shirt, slipping the wa dao harness on over his bare skin.  Depending on the scope of the job, he’s stripped to his undershorts before, just to avoid getting too much blood on his clothing.  He didn’t feel it was necessary as he didn’t anticipate hand-to-hand combat - or so he hoped.  He checked the rest of his set-up and thus satisfied, dropped down lightly from the ridge and approached the encampment.

He stuck to the shadows and moved silently in the darkness.

The goblins didn’t know what hit them.  In fact, the wider faction of The Right-Left Foot wouldn’t know anything was amiss until a few days later, when a messenger from the main encampment discovered the grisly scene.  For now, the camp didn’t stir and Tom-Cat went to work.

He crept up to the first guard closest to the ridge, grabbed him, and slit his throat with a six inch tanto blade between blinks.  The goblin didn’t have time to register what was happening before its blood was spilled onto the ground and Tom-Cat was dragging its lifeless body into the shadow of the nearby tent.  He paused, listening, and then entered said tent.

He stopped just inside the entrance, letting his glowing yellow eyes take in his new surroundings.  He noted the deep breathing and light snores of the tent’s occupants, made a plan in his mind, and then went to work.  None of the goblins had time to wake up, their throats slit as they lay dreaming on their mats.  It was done in under ten minutes; the assassin worked fast and efficiently, not wasting time second guessing his chosen course of action.  His mind was clear.  It was a nice change from the chaos of his thoughts of late, from his indecision, and from his confusion.

Slitting throats was simple.  It was his business.  It was what he’d been trained to do since he was a child.  His hands knew the motions to go through.

And so it went.

╺ ✽ ╸

It took Tom-Cat most of the night to “take care” of the encampment of one hundred goblins, but he got it done with no alarms raised.  He only directly confronted the last guard left alive, toying with him a bit before pulling the wa dao and finishing it.  He liked the panic in the goblin’s eyes when it shouted the alarm and no answer came, liked seeing the flash of hopelessness and resignation in its cruel face.  He left that one with a fatal stomach wound, bleeding out and far from help.  It’d be dead within ten minutes.

The assassin returned to the ridge and judged it to be early morning.  He didn’t put his shirt back on, but as he made his way back towards the estate, he did stop to wash the blood from his skin in a cold creek running down into a dark crevice.  He felt immensely satisfied with his work and in a far better mood.  Maybe he would go and tell the Aeros that her cooking was edible, after all.

Faction of the Right-Side Hand

(Auxiliary Battilion)

The Faction of the Right-Side Hand is breakaway faction of the original Left-Hand Foot Goblin Clan.  The Auxillary Battilion is the second largest of the factions fighting force.  Interspersed with the warriors are "battle mages" who wield crude, elementary magicks, and worker goblins who maintain the encampment and serve as runners and messengers between the Forward, Auxillary, and Core forces. Here and there beasts of burden can be seen shuffling miserably in their pens, having been brought to the darkness of the UnderNeath from the sunlit world above.

TOM CAT

A Felonious Feline

╺ ✽ ╸

[OOC: From HERE at the Hidden Estate of Duskhill

Things...were not going well.  Tom-Cat wasn’t so prideful that he can’t admit this to himself.  What was harder to square, was the fact that he’d been so jookaan close to actually clearing the whole stinking camp without any issues; he’d run his blade across at least 182 of the goblins’ sickly green throats as they’d laid sprawled and oblivious on their mats, dreaming whatever vulgar dreams dumb creatures like them had.  Do the stupider, smaller ones even have the capacity to dream? The assassin honestly doesn’t care; when it comes down to it, after a throat is cut, every single creature chokes on their own blood in the same frantic, seizing, and gasping manner as the next...and the next...and the next.  And so it went.  That one grisly, yet inarguable fact was oddly reassuring to him in its simple constancy, something he could rely on as consistent and true amidst the usual volatility of his otherwise wayward life.

So.jookaan.close.

During his earlier surveillance, he’d estimated there to be around 245 goblins in the encampment, the main brunt of the force divided between workers and soldiers, with about a quarter of them subdivided into a separate, elite unit of goblin tohungas.  That had come as a surprise; Tom-Cat would never have guessed that the notoriously dull-minded cretins had either the intelligence or capacity to wield any magick, let alone the rudimentary magicks he’d witnessed the tohungas employed.  Finally, there were 5 larger, sharper-looking goblin brutes who he’d seen bully about the campsite, the slashes of color across their skin and clothing signifying four of them to be captains, with the last and largest among them holding fast to the rank of lieutenant through brute strength, above (goblin) average intelligence, and spasmodic bursts of pure, indiscriminate violence.

The Auxiliary Battalion was a fairly large and sprawling encampment, with 36 tents in total set into a loose, stacked horseshoe formation.  The row of 10 inner tents served as housing for the lieutenant, captains, and the tahungas.  The 26 remaining tents  were arranged in a wider arc to form a barrier along the outer curve of the horseshoe, and served as a simple first line of defense against any people or creatures that wandered in from the caves that the Faction of the Right-Left Hand had yet to annex.  The workers and soldiers were segregated by groups into separate tents, with soldiers in striped tents of various colors, and workers in ones that varied in shades of solid blue.  The blue and striped tents were staggered intermittently as they curved along the outer edge in a slapdash fashion, the rows sloppy and uneven.

There was plenty of room within the curve of the horseshoe for several large cookfires to be set up, and they’re scattered rather haphazardly across open space, with no rhyme or reason as far as Tom-Cat could discern. Several smaller tents that served as larders and equipment caches were clustered around each of the large fire pits.  Crudely constructed pens holding several muskox-like Rothe were situated nearest to the outer row of tents, most likely due to the Rothe’s notoriously pungent odor.  (It’s said that the stench of wet a Rothe is so foul, that even the most stalwart amongst men will find their eyes watering should they find themselves standing downwind of one.)  Tom-Cat was inclined to agree; his heightened sense of small caught small whiffs of the Rothe’s pungent musk wafting from their pens, even when he’d been several hundred yards away.

The itch under his skin hadn’t gone away during his journey to the encampment, nor has it dissipated over the long hours of surveillance as he’d waited for the goblins to sup, drink, squabble, and eventually, retire to their tents.  He’d been surprised by the somewhat robust patrol which had then been set up, with a group of 9 goblins made up of 6 soldiers and 3 tohungas, patrolling at all time on high alert.  They moved in sets of 3 to patrol down the left, right, or central areas of the camp, with an individual set consisting of a single tohunga accompanied by a pair of soldiers.  When he’d gradually crept close enough for his keen ears to pick up snatches of their guttural conversations, it’d helped to shed some light on the situation.

Apparently, a messenger from the Auxiliary Battalion had been sent to the Forward Encampment mere hours after Tom-Cat left, and had subsequently stumbled into the grisly nightmare of 99 stiff corpses lying on red-stained cots that were soaked in an alarming amount of their own, still-wet blood.  And that was before the discovery that all 99 bodies all shared the same, near-identical wound which gashed across the column of their throats and cleaved cleanly through the esophagus.  The 100th goblin had been found sprawled out mid-crawl by the outer edge of the tents, in what had been an apparent and useless attempt to find help.  The desperate goblin left a trail of smeared blood and viscera in its wake, with bits of entrails strung out along the rocky ground behind it as the dying creature wasted its breath on a hopeless endeavor.

He’d grinned a bit when he’d heard that; he couldn’t even bring himself to feel bad for the pathetic thing, and only half-wished he’d been able to witness its sad and pointless undertaking play out in person.

The messenger, who had only been sent to bring news of an upcoming delivery of provisions, had turned tail and fled back to the Auxiliary Battalion in absolute hysterics.  It had come running into the encampment raving madly about a bloody massacre, eyes wide and wild, all sense of calm and logic having long since absconded with the shredded scraps of its sanity.  Their lieutenant of the Battilion was a bulky goblin named Not Madshredder.  Not Madshredder was known for keeping a running total of its kills in tally marks that were scored deeply into its flesh, on any bit of unmarked surface it could find across its face and body.  Madshredder had exited its tent at the messenger’s increasingly loud caterwauling, and stood over the smaller goblin for a moment, before casually pulling out a small, wickedly curved knife and carefully carving a new slashing tally mark deep into the meat of its left cheek.  Then, heedless of the blood flowing from the new wound on its face, Madshredder put away the knife and abruptly lifted the heavy spiked bludgeon that'd been hanging at its side, high over its head.  There was no hesitation as the big goblin swiftly swung the bludgeon down, and with a single, powerful Crack, instantly brained the messenger.  As the heavy weapon caved in the smaller goblin’s skull, the messenger’s inane dithering was brought to an immediate end.

Afterwards, a small party of warriors and tohungas had been sent to verify the now dead messenger’s hysterical claims.  They'd returned an hour later with confirmation that the Forward Encampment had indeed been obliterated, and all but one of the goblin warriors had had its throat slit as it had slept.   Thus confirmed,  Madshredder had immediately ordered the entire battalion to be on high alert.

Fortunately for Tom-Cat, Madshredder as well as the wider camp populace, thought they were looking out for a surprise attack by their rivals from the Left-Hand Foot Faction, that was at least ten goblins strong.  Given that they were only on the watch for a raiding party and not a lone intruder, it had been fairly simple for the assassin to slip unnoticed into the camp at the first available opportunity.  Honestly, it was child’s play to begin his work, the deep, rhythmic snores and slurred mutterings of the goblins sleeping on their cots becoming a susurration of white noise in the background of his awareness, nothing more than a meaningless hum of fluid and shapeless sound eddying through the yawning chasms in his mind where he his thoughts felt stretched thin by conflicting emotion and impulse.  When he’d slit the throats of every goblin in the tent, it felt as if the formless hum ceased all at once.  It left him feeling void, like the absence of sound left him drained and exhausted, but still wide-awake; he felt strung out and jittery, with restlessness gnawing at his nerve endings in a way that made him twitchy.  It made him feel as if he’d gone days without sleep.

Had he? He couldn’t remember.

He should have left then.

Instead, Tom-Cat had grit his teeth, determined to finish this business, ignoring the desperate edge to his actions.  Such an easy job usually helped to clear his mind and order his thoughts, for, as grim as it was, slashing the throats of sleeping marks was something he could do by rote.  It didn’t take much thought for his hands to follow well-trod motions, and the act of killing in cold blood didn’t weigh heavily upon him.  He was a predator, they were prey; it was as simple and as dispassionate as that.  He almost felt frenzied as he slipped into one tent after the other, his quiet, mounting desperation for that feeling of deep-settled satisfaction that came from a job well done, making him hasty and more prone to making tiny mistakes that he’d never make normally.  But tiny mistakes can become huge mistakes in the blink of an eye in Tom-Cat’s line of work; they can add up quickly, that tiny trickle of missteps easily snowballing onto a series of harrowing moments that juggled life with death as every second passed.

He couldn’t shake the Aeros from the grooves of his mind, his conflicted emotions about her spread over every inch of his thoughts like a handful of sand that had been thrown carelessly across the cushions of a couch, the fine, white granules trickling down through the threads of the fabric with the ease of water passing through a sieve.  He.Couldn’t.Dig.Her.Out.Of.His.Mind. The itch under his skin persisted like the faint stirrings of sickness and fever pulsing down through layers of skin and muscle to lay a webwork of heat over his bones.  It was distracting.

It is distracting.

He’s distracted by the webwork of heat settled under his skin and his thoughts which continue to loop and spiral in circles that have no end and yield no useful answers.  Something was going to give, sooner or later; something had to break, because he’s anger hasn’t gone away and is not going away.  It just simmered, ever present and unignorable, fisted tightly in his chest like something cancerous and black that oozed poison into the far branches of his nervous system in a way that made him feel wound up and edgy.

It really wasn’t that much of a surprise when Tom-Cat walked right out of tent number 26 (so jookaan close - there’d only been 10 more to go) without bothering to stop and listen first, and walked smack dab into a 3-goblin patrol.  There was a weird moment where neither party did anything but stare at one another in delayed shock, the air seeming to go still with anticipation.  Tom-Cat recovered first, the sudden jolt from adrenaline flooding through his system clearing his head so swiftly it was almost dizzying.  He lashed his tail in agitation, hissed at the 3 goblins, and without so much as a twitch of an ear to telegraph it, immediately changed his grip on the 5 inch knife in his hand.  He swept his arm up and around into a fast, tight arc; the only indication that he’d moved was the brief flash of the glittering metal blade as it swiftly sliced through the air.

The goblins had finally started to move, when suddenly twin fountains of blood sprayed like crimson geysers from the gaping wounds in the necks of the two soldiers.  The pair of goblins could only gurgle and clutch at the blood pumping out in steady spurts, their fingers uselessly closing over the spot where Tom-Cat had sliced directly through each of their jugulars in one fell swoop.  They bled out within seconds, their bodies folding up into graceless heaps as they collapsed where they stood; they were dead before they even hit the ground.

Blood splashed onto his shirt and skin, warm against the cool air of the cavern.  Tom-Cat didn’t wait for the remaining goblin to attack or run; he struck as quick as an adder’s strike as he rushed the final one and grabbed the arm closest to him with his free hand.  He pivoted behind the creature, his grip ruthless and unyielding as he brutally twisted its arm up behind its own back.  He kept twisting until he heard (and felt) the loud and telltale Pop! as its shoulder was yanked violently from its socket.  As soon as he'd felt the joint lock up, then give way under the assault of the relentless pressure, the assassin sliced the goblin’s vocal cords before its scream could bubble up its throat.  He let the creature go and stared dispassionately as the goblin, shaking in shock and agony, stumbled forward, before he abruptly grabbed its injured shoulder in a cruelly tight grip and yanked back, hard.  The goblin fell backwards onto his blade, the cold steel slipping smoothly between its ribs. The knife slid easily through its flesh, and, with effortless accuracy, pierced its right lung.

TOM CAT

A Felonious Feline

╺ ✽ ╸

“If the pull of the outside world is strong, there is also a pull towards the human. The cat may disappear on its own errands, but sooner or later, it returns once again for a little while, to greet us with its own type of love.”

– Lloyd Alexander

[OOC: From the Hidden Estate of Duskhill]

Tom-Cat paused halfway to nowhere, one hand splayed along the cool outer wall of the tunnel he was traversing.  He let the silence of the Underneath eddy around him, felt the slow decay of the stones beneath his palm, the trickling stillness of them sliding between his fingers.  It was moments like these that he actively sought to soothe his racing thoughts, the solitude, a crease in time where he could simply be Tom-Cat.  He knew that soon he wouldn’t even have that, for the longer he stayed, the longer he allowed himself to find warmth, happiness, some cold comfort in companionship, the further She would be wedged into his...his what? His heart? He almost laughed. That was supposed to have been beaten out of him long ago.  He knew that eventually he wouldn’t be able to shake off the weight of the bond they shared, and that he won’t be able to find comfort in the silence because his thoughts would be too loud to fully drown out; because the bond wouldn’t let him drown her out.

Nor did he think he wanted to.

No matter what he might think, Myrae might have actually done him a favor, in the long run.  Sooner or later he would’ve cracked and told her, probably at the least opportune time to do so.  So…what was he doing, storming out and stalking the shadows, because what? He’d been caught off guard by that skwich’s ambush? He should’ve expected it of the voluptuous Drow.  It was her modus operandi.  So why wasn’t he back there with her? Why was he out here, alone…  Where there was nobody looking to him for answers he wasn’t sure he was ready to give; where he could let his shoulders slump.  Where there were no eyes on him, digging under his skin far too easily than he wanted; where he could process all of...this, whatever it was, this thing that he had to consciously pull back from.

It was frightening how easy it was to pretend with her.

How easy it was to lie to himself.  Because ultimately? Tom-Cat knew what he was; he knew how sullied he was, how broken.  And he always told himself that he wouldn’t be someone who let someone break on his jagged edges.  Period.  So he pulled away from Miiya, even though he wanted...he just wanted.

 Her.

He was so goddamned pathetic.  He can barely stand himself.  He needed something to do so he could ignore this itch in his skin telling him to turn back.  Comfort.  He snorted.  As if.  People like him were not deserving of it - at least that had been ground into him early on. That one stuck.  Maybe clearing out that last goblin encampment would help clear his head.  He could handle goblins, even a large encampment of them; or so he told himself.  And if he couldn’t? Well, that would be fine too.  He could probably get a good amount of the filthy creatures cleared out before anyone noticed he hadn’t come back.  With any luck, they wouldn’t even find his corpse.

As Tom-Cat slunk off into the night, he doesn’t question how seriously macabre the trend of his thoughts are, even though some distant part of him knew that no matter how much he might secretly hate himself, he’d never been one to just wish for death.  Still, the thought, the twinge of something else, was easy to dismiss as he gains the shadows and begins his hunt.

Faction of the Right-Side Hand

(Core Force)

The Faction of the Right-Side Hand is a breakaway faction of The Left-Hand Foot Goblin clan.  The Core Force is the largest of the faction's three fighting forces.  The Core Force is usually made up of goblin "soldiers", tohungas, workers, and their families.  However, two devastating attacks on their forces lately, has caused a palpable blanket of paranoia to settle over the remaining force.  The first of the attacks wiped out Forward Encampment utterly - all 100 goblins and all while they'd been asleep in their bunks.  The second of the attacks nearly wiped out the whole of the Auxillary Battilion, with only 60-some goblins left alive out of a camp of over 200.

The remaining survivors of the Auxillary Battilion have joined up with the Core Force, who have, in turn, sent the women and children away.  Rumor has it, that the leader of the Auxillary Battlion, a brute named Not Madshredder, has indicated that they shouldn't be on the lookout for a large raiding party from The Left-Hand Foot faction, but a single attacker, instead...

TOM CAT

A Felonious Feline

╺ ✽ ╸

“If the pull of the outside world is strong, there is also a pull towards the human. The cat may disappear on its own errands, but sooner or later, it returns once again for a little while, to greet us with its own type of love.”

– Lloyd Alexander

"Yer free to vith right off, whenever the mood strikes yew."

Tom-Cat can’t get that skwich’s damn words out of his head.  Myrae’s capacity for mindless cruelty still manages to surprise him, even knowing what he knows about the former Bothrel spy.  Gods, he should have choked her when they had their encounter in the hot springs.  At least then he might have avoided having to hurt Miiya like that; seeing that glassy-eyed look on her face will haunt him for some time.  Just thinking about it causes an itch of an entirely different sort to burn under his skin, a webwork of heat settles over his bones.  It needs an outlet; his fingers twitch, the need for violence an almost physical want he can’t ignore.

He’s closed himself off from the bond.  It frightens him how hard it was to do so, how fiercely he wants to check it; to check on her.  Yet he doesn’t - not yet.  As he stands on a ledge above the Core Force of the Right-Side Hand faction, some distant part of himself knows that this isn’t a good idea.  The encampment below him is teeming with goblins on high alert, his work on the previous two camps having caused the last one to suffused with intense paranoia.

He wasn’t in the right frame of mind to do this.

It was easy enough to shake off his doubts, if only because focusing on killing allowed him to ignore the hurt he felt deep in his own core.  He should really go back…NO! He–he couldn’t stand to see that hurt expression on her face and know that he was the one that put it there.  Maybe he was being cowardly…no, it was just practical.  They both needed the space.  Or so he told himself.

Before he could change his mind, Tom-Cat loosened the sheath of the Wa dao, checked the rest of his kit that he’d grabbed on his way out of the estate, and leapt down off the ridge with a swish of his tail.

TOM CAT

A Felonious Feline

╺ ✽ ╸

“If the pull of the outside world is strong, there is also a pull towards the human. The cat may disappear on its own errands, but sooner or later, it returns once again for a little while, to greet us with its own type of love.”

– Lloyd Alexander

An arrow whizzes past one of Tom-Cat’s grey-furred ears as he smoothly runs down a side tunnel.  The assassin doesn’t look back at his pursuers, just pins his ears flat to his head and keeps running.  Blood drips from his fingertips, and his hands and forearms are stained dark red; his chest is splattered with a not-insubstantial amount of it, warm and wet on his skin.  A bloody handprint encircles his throat in a red, five-fingered mark where the goblin brute, Not Madshredder, attempted to strangle him in their death throes.

None of the blood is his own.

Something screams in his brain and Tom-Cat ducks and lurches to the left;  a hatchet clangs off of the stone where his head had been, just a second before.  He lashes his tail angrily, and he pivots, smoothly bringing an arm up as he flicks his wrist.   He’s already turned and has started running again, just as there’s a gurgling cry behind him and the goblin who threw the hatchet crashes to the ground, a throwing knife buried to the hilt in its throat.  Tom-Cat jumps and clears a boulder in his path, two more arrows bouncing off the ground where he’d been standing.

Suffice it to say, things had not gone how he’d expected at the Core Force encampment.

Well, that’s not entirely true.  Tom-Cat had been doing exceptionally well, slitting throats of sleeping goblins in the tents on the outer fringe, when he’d decided to finally check the bond and check on Miiya.  He’d just been unable to ignore it any longer, the burn within him demanding that he ensure he check in on his bondmate.  And when he had…all he’d felt was cold.  Even thinking back to it, it makes something twist within his chest and a sour taste rise to the back of his throat.  She’d been so…cold, so hurt.  All because of him.

At that point he knew that he couldn’t stay there and kill goblins.  He had to go back and try to make things right.  And so, distracted and not fully in control of himself, Tom-Cat had strode right out of the tent (he’d managed to kill around 200 out of the 400-some encampment) and literally ran into Not Madshredder himself.  Unlike the goblin patrol he’d run smack into in the Auxiliary Battalion, the goblin brute had acted almost instantly.

Not that Not Madshredder had been much of a match for him, but the six or so goblins that had noticed their scuffle and immediately joined in, were a different story.  One-on-one, Tom-Cat is lethal, deadly, and skilled.  Against multiple opponents, he’s…less so.  That’s not to discount his lethality, but it’s too easy for the agile catboy to be surrounded and overwhelmed against 7-to-1 odds.  After he’d slipped his knife between Not Madshredder’s ribs and twisted, he’d had to beat a hasty retreat.

Twenty goblins gave chase.  He’d engaged them initially, picking off the tohungas first, and performing a series of hit and runs as he led them on a chase through the surrounding caves.  More had joined, this time bringing archers with them, which is when he’d had to change tactics, using the throwing knives he’d brought with him to thin their number.  But he only had so many knives.  And they had many more arrows.

As the assassin retreats down a winding tunnel, he estimates there to be about fifteen goblins left.  He’s trying to come up with a plan as to how he might give them the slip or take them out, when a loud, piercing animal scream of rage raises his hackles in an instant.  The roar echoes in his ears and through the surrounding caves and tunnel system, so loud that he wouldn’t be surprised if it could be heard all the way at Duskhill.  He doesn’t turn as goblinoid screams of pain and terror erupt behind him, intermingled with the sound of deep predatory snarls, underpinned by the sound of ripping flesh.

Tom-Cat clears the winding tunnel and emerges into a large cave that overlooks a series of connected lakes that seem to stretch on for miles.  It might be pretty, but the catboy can’t appreciate it right then.  He turns and faces the tunnel he just came from, waiting to see what this new threat is.  He’s almost unnaturally still, every sense focused and strained on the dark mouth of the tunnel.

And then he sees it.

displacerbeast is sunstealer2

Kwesh…” he breathes.   The beast steps slowly out of the tunnel, splattered with dark goblin blood, its glowing eyes meeting his own.  As he watches, the sleek pantherine creature scents the air and narrows its gaze on him, smelling the sweat and blood staining his skin.  It’s powerful black body prowls a bit closer, six paws ending in razor-sharp claws clicking on the stone ground beneath it.  It’s tail whips to and fro.  On its back are two whip-like tentacles, each ending in an oblong appendage that looks a bit like the mouth of a venus fly trap.  Except this mouth is lined with rows and rows of sharp-looking, hooked teeth.

The juvenile Sun Stealer raises its head and issues a roar of challenge that echoes through the cave system in every direction.

Tom-Cat hisses in response and draws the Wa Dao.  He shifts his stance, holding the hilt in a reverse grip.  Then, almost as one, he and the juvenile Sun Stealer leapt towards one another….

TOM CAT

A Felonious Feline

Tom-Cat's new look
Tom Cat [new]1

╺ ✽ ╸

The Sun Stealer and Tom-Cat are a blur of motion.   Neither seems to ever stop moving, both opponents in deadly lockstep with one another, like professional dancers engaged in an impromptu and avante garde performance.   Except this performance is measured in blood, sweat, and will that pits the beast's desire to kill against Tom-Cat's desire to live.  And each of their desires are strong.

The Sun Stealer is fast; Tom-Cat will concede it that much.  Each of the creature's movements are fluid and uncannily precise, every lunge it makes, each swipe of its claws, and every whip of its teeth-tipped tentacles, engineered to be a debilitating or killing blow.  Tom-Cat is faster by a decent margin, his biology keeping his muscles perpetually loose and warmed, ensuring that he's able to react in the split second between attacks from the creature's various appendages.  It's persistent, however; the few slashes that he's been able to score have only made the beast madder and more eager to taste his blood than ever.

With another snarl and responding hiss, the pair resume their deadly tango.

╺ ✽ ╸

Wickedly sharp teeth snap just centimeters shy of Tom-Cat's right shoulder as he dances out of the way of a lunge, immediately curving into a backbend to dodge a double swipe of the Sun Stealer's front claws.  He twists, plants a foot, and dives forward in between the two tentacles that whip out towards him, each multi-toothed end seeking to tear into his flesh with bloodthirsty greed.  Right before he tucks into a roll, the assassin lashes out with the Wa Dao and is rewarded when the beast screams in pain and leaps away, favoring its right front paw.   The Wa Dao's matte black blade is slick with blood.

Tom-Cat rolls to his feet and instantly brings up his free hand, catching one of the tentacles as it whips out towards his head.  He digs into it with his claws, gouging as deep into the muscular appendage as possible while also trying to prevent it from coiling around him in a crushing hold.   He slashes at the second as the flexible limb attempts to grab his legs, and is almost surprised when he slices clean through the tip.  Immediately the Sun Stealer roars in agony, but Tom-Cat almost doesn't hear it.  Instead, he's focused on the green, toxic-looking fluid that's now leaking from the severed end.

Poison.  The tentacles are poisonous!

The assassin is now ten times more grateful that he's managed to incapacitate at least one of the poison-filled appendages.

The black-skinned creature rips its uninjured tentacle out of Tom-Cat's grasp, his claws leaving five deep, bloody trenches gored into its flesh.  He jumps back and away without delay, as for the first time in perhaps fifteen minutes, the Sun Stealer doesn't follow up with another attack straightway.  Instead, it hangs back as they circle one another, the beast limping, its severed tentacle dragging behind it.   Its glowing eyes are fastened on him, nothing within their depths but hate and pain.   Tom-Cat knows that he needs to take this chance to end it.

He switches his grip on the Wa Dao and drops low into a sprinters stance.  He places the tips of his free fingers on the ground, his blood-soaked claws clicking against the hard surface.   He narrows his eyes at the beast, his lambent, yellow slitted gaze hyper focused on it and movement of its sleek body.   His ears are perked forward, listening to its drooling, heavy breaths; the sound of its useless tentacle dragging on the ground; the clicking of its claws against the stone floor.

Tom-Cat goes eerily still, waiting, anticipating…

The Sun Stealer doesn't make him wait long, as with a furious screech that calls to that primal, animalistic place within him, the creature, blinded by hate and pain, leaps directly at him.   Tom-Cat springs forward and dives into the beast's path.  He twists his body as he threads precariously between its front paws, and punches the blade of the Wa Dao straight up and into its chest.   The creature's opposing momentum wrenches the weapon from his hands, and carries it away from him as he lands on the hard surface of the cave floor on his back.  He rolls to his feet, breathing heavily, but watches the Sun Stealer carefully.

The beast issues a primal death cry, its screams of agony almost painful to hear.  It crashes to the ground in a heap of thrashing limbs and labored breath, blood leaking from its jaws and staining its muzzle.  He watches as it stares at him hatefully, the thrashing of its limbs turning into convulsions, which eventually settle into dying twitches.  The Sun Stealer hisses feebly at him, wheezes out a wet breath, and closes its eyes as it goes still.

Tom-Cat watches the beast for a long moment, making sure he can detect no movement of its chest or limbs, before he approaches its carcass.  He rolls the creature onto its side with his foot, then leans down and pulls the Wa Dao free of its body.  He cleans the blade on its side before sheathing the weapon, then turns as he feels a familiar thrum through the bond.   She's close!

Tom-Cat can't help the happy thrill that goes through him at the feeling, and he turns his back to his fallen foe as he turns his gaze in the direction he feels her.  "Teleskela?" he questions out loud.

He takes a single step in that direction, when it happens.

Like a villain out of some horror movie,  the Sun Stealer rears up behind him, one last time.   Tom-Cat only has enough time to bring his arms up to prevent the tentacle that wraps around his chest from crushing the air from his lungs, as the Sun Stealer, with its true dying breath, coils its tentacle around his body like an anaconda and squeezes tightly.   Tom-Cat is pushing back against the crushing force when he feels the hooked teeth at the end of the appendage sink into his side.  Through the sharp pain, he can feel the poison flow into him.

The Sun Stealer then goes still, the tentacle around him tightening as it finally, truly dies.  The hooked teeth slip out of his flesh, but the tentacle remains firmly coiled around him.  Tom-Cat can feel the poison already working through his system, feeling himself grow feverish and weak.

"Kwesh…" he manages to stutter out as the edges of his vision start to dim. "Teleskela... "

And then all goes dark and he knows no more.

Miiya

From: Duskhill

Tom!” Miiya cried as The TonDen surmounted the cliff that lead to the cavern ledge where the assassin had killed the Sunstealer. She dropped from the golems back and rushed to the stricken boy’s side.

Even as she reached him, Miiya felt helpless dread knotting her insides. Tom-Cat was bloodied and unmoving. His skin was lacerated with wounds that all looked mortal to Miiya’s untrained eye. His color was wrong and he was still locked in the tentacled embrace of some monster that also seemed dead. Fearfully, she touched his face, placing her hands alongside each cheek. “Tom? Tom!” Miiya could do little more than say his name--or at least the truncated version of it brought about by her worry. He felt cold. Not yet as cold as the stone on which he lay, but certainly not as warm as he had when he was…

I should have brought Myrae!

The thought was unwelcome and unbidden, but it was not untrue. Miiya was no healer. She could not even tell if the boy was alive or…

Don’t think about that! What can yew do? She did not even have a knife with which to cut away the constricting tentacle. A moment of frenzied tugging at the muscular appendage proved fruitless, and she nearly cut herself upon the barbed tip that still glistened with poison.

Wait! I have a TonDen!

Miiya did not spare herself time to feel anger at her panicked stupidity. “Mister TonDen, can yew help?” Even as she asked, she touched the foreleg of the golem, giving it little say in the matter.

At Miiya’s compulsion, the TonDen’s functioning pincer cut free the tentacle encircling Tom-Cat. The golem knelt and unwound it from the prostrate boy.

Gently, please! We need to get him back to Duskhill!” Miiya decided, willing The Tonden to lift Tom-Cat upon its back and fold its fins over him. She followed, climbing onto the Golem, seating herself in reverse so she could face the boy. Straddling the TonDen and gripping its carapace with her thighs she leaned forward, trying to cradle the catboy’s head from the jarring of The TonDen’s gait. “Quickly, back to the house, please, Mister TonDen!”

The TonDen

From: Duskhill

Miiya’s commands would have been filtered by The TonDen’s logic gates. Her emotions were running far too high, but The TonDen had spent some of the previous days of quiet reflection building switches into those same filters in its crystalline mind. Recognizing the need for haste, that it could not meet, The TonDen had disabled the logic gate that shunted away orders given when a friend was too emotional.

The TonDen had never saved a life before, and it contemplated this very not-Rei action with the majority of its slow-turning mind while Miiya’s compulsions prompted it to act.

Placing the stricken catling onto it’s back beneath its fins, the TonDen bent it’s Uman-sized arms back to steady Miiya while she held Tom-Cat. It said not a word as it lunged off back toward Duskhill.

Miiya

The Aeros girl hoped she was doing the right thing. She, herself, had been treated--and self-treated--crash syndrome along with various other injuries, but she had never dealt with poisons or major injuries like those sustained by Tom-Cat. Should he be moved? Did she need to bring some of the monster’s poison along to make an antidote? Did antidotes exist? Should she elevate his head or his feet? Cool him? Heat him?

Miiya wished Sen were here. Her mother knew poisons--was a poisoner. But she had tried to hide these deadly dealings from her daughter; shelter her from the evils working for Osu sometimes necessitated. So Miiya knew next to nothing of venoms and toxins.

It was hard to look at the sallow face of the injured boy, and Miiya felt a catch in her throat as she tried to keep Tom-Cat from being too badly jostled. His blood was seeping out from beneath The TonDen’s folded weapon-wings, and it seemed like he had lost a lot of his vitae. “What were yew doing, Tom?” She whispered as they stumped rapidly toward Duskhill. “Why did yew go away?”

Miiya couldn’t help the pang of guilt that her questions elicited. She knew exactly why he had left. She knew she had looked hurt--had been hurt, by Myrae’s revelation, and that it was her he was running from. “Stupid. Don’t run away. Don’t go getting …hurt.” Miiya gulped, wishing she could do something with her hands other than simply place them on Tom-Cat’s too-cool brow. “Don’t… don’t… d--” She leaned forward until she could lay her head next to Tom-Cat’s. “Just stay with me, please, Tom.”

TOM CAT

A Felonious Feline

╺ ✽ ╸

[OOC: in transit to the Hidden Estate of Duskhill]

Somewhere in the soupy darkness of his mind, there was an occasional ray of light: her voice.  Though the shape of her words were lost on him, the bond managed to push through the pain of his wounds and the burn of the poison that slipped insidiously through his veins to tell him that she was near.  Even so, his nerves felt lacerated by the toxin in his blood.  He feels weirdly hot, yet his center, usually so warm, was frightfully cold.  Part of him - a large part of him - simply wanted to give up and slip into the luring black embrace of death that called to him.

And yet something kept him from doing so.  Something inside of him, something vital that wound around the core of who he was, told him, no screamed at him, not to.  It pleaded with him to stay; she pleaded with him to stay.  Some distant part of himself could feel how scared she was,  her fear thrumming against his ribcage and striking a note along each curved bone.  She was scared…for him.

Tom-Cat couldn’t make sense of the noise around him, but for the briefest of moments he twitched and reached out for her, unseeing yellow eyes cracking open the barest amount.  His eyes were cloudy, and, gods, everything inside of him just hurt.  His face twisted into a grimace, but he instinctively sought to comfort his bondmate.  As it was, all he could really do was tip his head forward a little until their foreheads touched before he was pulled back under again.  Even though fire burned in his veins, his skin was cold to the touch.  Tom-Cat heaved a shallow breath and then went terrifyingly still…

An Abandoned Goblin Camp

(Fomerly the Forward Encampment)

A former site for the Faction of the Right-Side Hand Goblin Clan, the Forward Encampment now sits deserted. A small camp of only ten tents, the Forward Encampment nonetheless originally housed 100 goblin warriors with orders to clear out small threats ahead of the Auxillary Battilion.  The camp was abandoned when messengers from the Core Force and Auxillary Battillion discovered the bodies of 99 goblins dead in their cots, each with their throats slit in identical fashion as they slept.  Only one goblin was found killed outside of one of the tents, having apparently been gutted.

Since then, there's evidence that the former camp was used by a group of Sun Stealers as a nesting site, but it now appears that the dangerous creatures have moved on, possibly abandoning their nest once their young were whelped.

The encampment currently appears empty, but one should always exercise caution in the Underneath...
