Situated along the side of an alpine mountain that boasts gorgeous scenery, stretches of green grass, snow fields, arctic lakes, and alpine meadows, one can find the main metropolitan of the famous Gnome city of Shaarn. The main metropolis of Shaarn is commonly referred to as Shaarn Anthos by the citizens, which in Gnomeish means "Shaarn Up Above".
The highest peak of the mountain is called Ninconin Peak which means “Snowdrop Peak”, thus named because of the eternal blizzard that swirls at the mountain’s highest point. The endless snowstorm means that Shaarn Anthos can be hit by a blizzard at any time with little warning, and see anywhere from several inches to several feet of snow.
The most affluent areas of the city are located on a series of tiered ridges along the slope of the mountain at its highest points, with the spires of the tallest buildings reaching towards the white capped peaks.
The City Guard heavily patrols the main areas of the city, and their presence is especially notable in the more prestigious areas of the main metropolitan. Their presence is also visible in The Red Light District, though how strictly the law is enforced in Shaarn's Lower Ward, is debatable.

A not-uncommon blizzard holds most of the Shaarn Anthos in its icy grip this afternoon. The storm, fed by copious monsoonal moisture from easterlies blowing up-mountain from Pirates Gulf has descended upon the streets and terraces of the upper city. Visibility is only a few feet in the driving snow and rumbles of thunder can be heard over the howling winds.
Nearly a foot of snow has already been deposited in the city streets and municipal shovelers are struggling to keep the main boulevards clear enough for wheeled traffic. Anyone venturing out will have to wade through deep drifts should they need to travel any side road or alleyway.

The elfmaid did not so much as pause before forging out of the high alpine tunnel and into the blinding storm. Her only acknowledgement of the inclement weather was to raise the hood of her duster against the wind as she walked on, wading through the knee-high drifts, leaving a trail for her goblin porters.
Faan needed to not think about the events of the grueling march through the Underneath, she did not want to know if Pioloss was no longer beside her. She was not even sure she wanted to know if he was. The howling snowstorm and its icy fingers seeking to penetrate her cloak provided a welcome background of blank whiteness to attempt to match in her troubled mind. The seamstress tried to crowd out any thoughts that might spoil the blankness by focusing on needs. They needed rest. They needed shelter.
(“Hey boss-lady! Yew said ‘not warm’. Yew didn’t say snow!!”)
Faan everyone desperately probably needed wanted a drink.
The first hotel looked promising. It was clearly an upscale establishment; warm, welcoming, with sheltering portico and even a deferential doorman--until he espied Faan’s goblin porters. His pleasant demeanor not slipping in the least, he pointed to a sign in common, elvish, dwarvish, and gnome. “No Goblinoids.”
Grog and Goblins

Huddled together, and trying to hide from the driving snow under under a lean-to comprised of Rigel, Pioloss, and Faan’s trunk, the nine-strong group of goblins already had several inches of snow deposited on their bald heads and protruding ears. “Oh it fine, Boss Lady.” Grog said in a voice laden with sarcasm. “We stand here and hold luggage and dees fatsos. Have nice time inside while Gobs freeze. Yew real good at leaving behind.”
Grog’s words were a too-obvious play upon the elfmaid’s emotions. That did not make them any less painful. Faan would not have abandoned her porters and companions in any case. The little shu could’ve just kept his mouth shut, but at least his attitude wasn’t the milksop patronization of Pioloss. Somehow the dhampir’s last words, meant to comfort her, had cut much more deeply than Grog’s honesty. “Is there somewhere that accepts their kind?” Faan asked the now-much-less-deferential doorman in a tired voice.
“Try that way.” Came the brusque reply.
“Come, grog.” Faan said, leading in the direction she was pointed. “Please be careful with Pioloss and Rigel.”
As she traipsed along a causeway bordered by sheer drops on either side, Faan reflected that this lodging must be perched as if on the edge of the worlde. The blizzard winds whipping over the upper reaches of Shaarn Nalos threatened to lift her entourage of porters off their feet and hurl them into the white-misted abyss if they did not anchor themselves to each other and their burdens.
Faan leaned into the wind and focused on puting one foot in front of the other just a few more times.

“Of course it’s vithing snowing.” Myrae groused to herself. Having no real impetus to do otherwise, she followed Faan in a tired stupor. It had been long since the drowess had visited the City of Craftsmen. She had her own favored establishments, but they were all in Lower Shaarn and she did not feel like walking there or trying to hire a carriage in the blizzard. Myrae’s outfit certainly did not lend itself well to cold weather. Her bodice had wards which made up for its lack of coverage, but they were battle magery and only meant to keep her alive--not necessarily comfortable. Standing next to the golems as Faan spoke to the doorman at her first, swanky, stop Myrae blew into her hands and jogged in place next to the goblin porters. “Hurry and make up yer mind, moonie.”
Then they were off into the storm again, since the gobs couldn’t lodge here. Myrae had to admit that her estimation of Faan improved a little. The elfmaid was surely tired and traumatized, but she soldiered on through the blizzard out of concern for her barely-sentient underlings. Myrae had noticed, too, Faan choosing her words carefully, to give Rigel and Pioloss excuse not to die down in the darkness on some futile quest.
“Fat lotta good it did.” She muttered to herself as she followed Faan into the Inn too Deep with no small measure of relief. It seemed only utter exhaustion was enough to keep the pair from throwing their lives away.
