Miiya

From: The Tangled Roads to Ufaeria

The last few hours had been a confusion of foodstuffs, noise, light, and sensations. Miiya would have had trouble making sense of it all were she sober, and under the influence of Graekokorheyurgardramyr’s smoke--well, fuggehdabadit!

After the turtle-dandelion had wilted the mushrooms had kicked up a tremendous fuss. More mushrooms had arrived and the whole entourage of them had kinda swept up her, cauliflower, and Ghost Kitty in a riotous parade out of the thermos and into--and this Miiya could not possibly mistake--the open air. She had not been totally cognizant of what was going on or how they had emerged upon the surface, but her sinuses told her that she was--at long last--well above sea-level.

After weeks in the stone-skied thick-air darkness, Miiya had sensed the open sky above, felt the snowflakes settling on her hair and upturned face, and breathed easily in the rarified mountain air of upper Shaarn. She wasn’t sure how or what had happened, but she knew it was Ghost Kitty--some aspect of Tom that had brought her here.

It had been cold and snowy. That, and the feeling of relief which came with escaping the underneath, helped sober Miiya slightly. Sobered her enough that Tom dying hurt. So she tried not to think of him as GC anymore. He was Tom, sort of. As they sat upon the plush cushions of the booth--into which they’d been ushered by ZyrrKrr ruddy-faced from cold, celebration, and drink--of some ornate hotel, Miiya leaned closer to what was left of Tom.

The news of the upper gate battalion’s victory over the dragon had swept up a goodly portion of the Dwarves in Shaarn, and all had descended en masse upon the fanciest local they could find, to celebrate in true Dwarven fashion. The bellmen of the de Glace had no choice but to throw open the doors and stand aside as literal wheelbarrows of forge gold and gemstones were upended into the lobby, providing a glittering carpet (and to pay for ensuing damages to drink, food, staff, furnishings, and structure) to usher the victors into a resplendent celebration.

Concierges had hurriedly escorted groups of backwards-glancing guests to their rooms, carriages, and to other establishments with promises to make them whole now that the de Glace was closed for an unannounced private party. Though it was nearing nightfall, morning, noon, and evening shifts were all recalled to service--and attempt to somewhat manage--the epic party the ZyrrKrr and their guests were throwing.

For their part, both Miiya and Tom-Cat were simply too inebriated and exhausted, respectfully, to truly appreciate the dwarven bacchanal. In the face of the light, noise, shouting, and back-thumping, Miiya shrank against Tom and accepted his guidance of what upon their table was edible food and what was tribute. Dragon scale, claws, and beakers of humors already being stripped from Graekokorheyurgardramyr’s corpse were heaped upon the table before them, along with platters of actual food from the frenzied kitchens of the de Glace.

As Miiya guided nourishment into her mouth and allowed Tom’s gentle redirection when she mistook a Morkoorod krowne for a cracker, she tried to smile and nod while the story of the mad  Aeros who peeled away Graekokorheyurgardramyr’s heartshield was retold at least a dozen times.

At one point, Tom must have ordered her a restorative draught, because Miiya was sobering up rather more quickly than she had during their long hungry ride on Picnic. The fete was still in its early hours when she grew present enough to see Dwarves instead of mushrooms, and Picnic--who was now more-or-less the centerpiece of the feasting hall--rather than cauliflower.

Miiya had not demurred and Tom had only prickled a little when the Lieutenant Commander of the battalion; the pro-tem leader upon Rockjaw’s death, had joined them and made a speech. In typical dwarven fashion--roughened by quite a lot of mead--he’d pulled Miiya’s broken wing open and pledged to have it repaired whatever the cost. There’d been more--something about Dwarven honorifics, lodging, food, and treasure, but Miiya had not really followed, having been occupied with refolding her wings and smoothing her own literal--and Tom’s figurative--ruffled feathers..

As the celebration continued, Miiya leaned more against Tom, uncharacteristically uninterested in the masses of succulent delights piled upon their table. Though she closed her eyes against it, after a while, the catboy would no doubt notice a dampness upon his arm where the side of Miiya’s face rested. Were he to inquire about what was wrong--unnecessarily, because even through the cooled ash of the remnants of the bond Miiya could sense he felt it, the same as her--she would answer “Could yew have stayed? Could I have gone too?”

Later, gathered in his arms, wings drooping but not trailing, Miiya put her hands around Tom-Cat’s neck and hid her face in his shoulder. She was sorry to be a wet blanket at such a fantastic soiree. At the same time, she was glad to feel the ghost of Tom echoing her emptiness. At least they were as together as they could be.

TOM CAT

A Felonious Feline

╺ ✽ ╸

"Don't depend too much on anyone in this world, because even your shadow leaves you when you're in darkness."

- Ibn Taymiyyah

[OOC: from the Tangled Roads to Ufaeria]

When the grotto had exploded into a whirlwind of activity and Tom-Cat found himself sort of…detached from it all.  Like he was watching everything happen to someone else or from just outside of his body.  It was a weird disconnect and for all of his initial fury, it had swiftly drained away after the ZyrrKrr had started swarming from the surrounding tunnels and attacked Graekokorheyurgardramyr.  And once his fury was gone, his weariness and hurt and emotional exhaustion began to seep in.

It made it difficult for Tom-Cat to gain a healthy perspective on…well, pretty much everything.  It made it hard to care—he’d barely been worried when Miiya had flown directly at the jookan one-eyed wingless wyrm and somehow prised off its chestplate.  All he’d been able to muster when she’d landed back next to him with a bloody-face and blown out pupils, was a sigh.

Because caring, worrying about, and having to be present for someone, was draining—both physically and emotionally. But Tom-Cat forced down his own hurt, his own suffering and stress, because that’s what you did for someone you loved, right? Especially one’s bondmate.  All that mattered was that she was taken care of, that she was safe, that she was made well.

His own wellbeing didn’t matter…right?

Tom-Cat was fine.  At least everyone seemed to think he was. Nobody really asked him how he was doing, actually—hells, the ZyrrKrr barely acknowledged he was there as they sat in the midst of the celebration.  He can’t remember them mentioning him much in any of the dragonslaying retellings, or talking to him much at the revelry.  They sure did talk up Graekokorheyurgardramyr’s missing eye, though.  The catling told himself that he didn’t really care, but a sharp pain jagged through his chest everytime the dragon’s missing eye was mentioned.

It made him feel increasingly disassociated from everything around him.  Maybe it would have been nice to have been remembered, after all.

Because with the way that the ZyrrKrr were hyperfocused on Miiya, the muted feel of the bond, and Miiya continually treating him like a ghost, Tom-Cat could almost convince himself that he really wasn’t there.  Maybe he wasn’t.  Maybe he really was invisible.

Maybe he should have stayed dead.

Would anyone have noticed?

Probably not.

Still, Tom-Cat cared for Miiya because he will always care for her.  She’s his bondmate, but the longer the night dragged on, the farther away from her he felt.  Shouldn’t he feel closer to her? That’s what the bond was (faintly) telling him: that he needed to be close to her in order to heal the threads of their bond.

So despite the distance he felt between them, he painted concern and attentiveness onto his expression.  He made sure she ate the right things, drank a restorative draught, and when he felt her fading, he carried her to their room.

The ZyrrKrr said goodnight to her.

Nobody said anything to him.

Spoiler
In reality...
Tom-Cat was actually wrong about that, but by then the catling was too withdrawn, sunk too low into his own thoughts, that he missed the fact that his presence was very much noted and missed.  He didn’t hear how the survivors of the battle with Graekokorheyurgardramyr immediately corrected those who mentioned the dragon’s missing eye without also attributing it to the catboy.  He didn’t see the concerned looks as those same survivors noted his increasingly withdrawn expression, and how he’d begun to fold in on himself over the course of the revelry.  He didn’t hear the ZyrrKrr call after him to return and drink with them, as he carried Miiya away.

Picnic

From: The Tangled Roads to Ufaeria

The Golem of Blue Ash stood motionless in the midst of the chaos. With so many inputs, the drow war machine had needed to quickly fashion a new logic gate. So many Dwarven hands were slapping the creature, so much--faux, Picnic now realized--weapons play, shouting, screaming, swinging from chandeliers, drinking, and eating was occuring--that Picnic invented a monitoring mode. The golem squatted and disabled most of its logic, simply taking in the madness of the ZyrrKrr celebration and trying to filter the most salient inputs for further processing.

The golem had decided it was pleased it had not needed to be destroyed in a battle with Graekokorheyurgardramyr. Like The Watcher, the dragon had been an enemy far beyond its capabilities to contest. Picnic was delighted--having filtered this concept from the fete--to have retrieved Friend Miiya and Friend Tom-Cat.

Other than pulsing with these internal thoughts, the great golem had been more-or-less as animated as an ice sculpture during the feast. It was only as the celebration stretched into a second day, and after its friends had departed, that Picnic moved. “I will.” It replied, when asked if it would accompany the ZyrrKrr to secure the repair of Miiya’s wing. Despite their revelry, the battalion’s new commander had not forgotten his promise to the girl who had opened the dragon’s armor.

ZyrrKrr

From: A contingent of dwarves returned from the Halari Suite, escorting two guests of honor.

The celebration of Graekokorheyurgardramyr’s defeat was now well into its second day and the common areas of the de Glace were showing the wear. There were more dwarves present, but fewer still on their feet.

The tables of the two dining areas had been shoved together and an all-day-all-night buffet was being supplied by tired-looking staff that had returned to shift work. Presently, the chef de cuisine was overseeing the operation and looking none-too-pleased when he appeared from the kitchen to observe his masterful creations being devoured by the rough-hewn legions of dwarven fighters. It was clear that he and his sous chefs were struggling with the idea of being line cooks for what had become a field camp for several hundred ZyrrKrr.

Fortunately, there were piles of forge gold and rough-cut emeralds, rubies, and diamonds to help assuage the insult.

The Captain of the Mid-City gate battalion had--by virtue of his booming voice and tolerance for drink--taken over as MC of the extravaganza. He was bellowing for attention to be paid to the Lieutenant Commander of the Highgate defenders, who had returned from a mission to the Winklestith Institute.

The acting captain of Highgate jumped onto a tabletop, pulling a rather bemused-looking Aeros girl and Catling with him. There was a lot of guttural shouting in Dwarvish--both from the Lieutenant Commander and answering cheers from those dwarves still sober enough to listen--waving of the Draegoleth’s Claw, and a quieter--but not very quiet--translation of his words into the common tongue, from one of the Sergeants, to Miiya and Tom-Cat.

“He says that we owe our victory to the two of yew.” A brown-bearded ZyrrKrr Sergeant translated. “We were on a mission to rescue yew, but yew rescued us.” He directed his next translation at Tom-Cat. “Graekokorheyurgardramyr would have defeated us, had yew not blinded him on one side.” There were succesive cheers and toasts raised as the captain of Highgate shouted accolades regarding Tom-Cat’s bravery. “Yew fought alone! Yew fought valiantly! Yew fought without fear and cowed the wyrm!”

“Yew’ve been given the title…” And here, the Sergeant made a noise not unlike a cat coughing up a hairball. “...which means ‘Dragon Eye’. Use this name with any ZyrrKrr and we are honor-bound to aid ye!” Tom-Cat would find a mug of ale pressed into his hands, with which he could return a toast from the speaker while the sea of dwarves roared in approval, and then quieted somewhat. “They want a speech from yew.” Explained the Sergeant.

It did not much matter what Tom-Cat said. His words, or even just a gesture, would be another excuse to bang tables, stamp feet, holler and drink--which every conscious dwarf in attendance wanted to do.

There was more, and this was clearly directed toward the Aeros girl. “Because of yew, Captain Rockjaw took Graekokorheyurgardramyr to The King Under the Mountain.” The Sergeant translated after a LOUD roar from the assembled dwarves. “Yew opened the wyrm’s heartshield and devoured some of the monster. Because of this, yer title is ‘Dragon Eater’.” The translator explained, after another noise with loads of rough glottal stops. As with Tom-Cat, Miiya had a drink thrust upon her and was faced with an endless sea of expectant bearded faces of the women and men of Morkoorod ZyrrKrr.

The content of Miiya’s speech mattered little to the celebrants, so long as it gave them an excuse for spirit and spirits.

After her response, the speech continued for a bit and was punctuated by a bit of a shocked hush from the crowd, that was then followed by a resounding cheer that shook the unbroken windows of the de Glace. “In honor of yer bravery, the heartshield and a claw of Graekokorheyurgardramyr is to be given to yew. We will pay Morkoorod Forgemasters to fashion them into arms and armor of yer choosing.” The translator interpreted to Tom-Cat. “And yew will fly again,” he said, turning to Miiya, “for we, the ZyrrKrr have bought a new wing for yew, in exchange for The Draegoleth’s Claw.”

Miiya

From: The Halari Suite

Wow. Really?” Miiya marveled, when told that she had peeled off Graekokorheyurgardramyr’s chest plate and taken a bite out of the dragon. She did not remember ANY of that. It was a little disconcerting, because Miiya’s last clear memory was of holding Tom-Cat’s feline form and screaming for him to stop trying to attack the monster. There were flashes of memories after that, but most of it was total nonsense--more like a dream--and none of it jived with the stories the dwarves were bellowing.

Despite being initially piqued at the interruption of the diminutive but boisterous army of ZyrrKrr, the Aeros girl was now fully engaged in the spirit of the celebration. “Omigod! I was sooo high!” She shouted, grinning broadly and raising her tankard to the cheering throng.

The Aeros girl looked over to Tom standing beside her. He seemed to be smiling too.

Seemed to be.

There were a lot of expectant and exuberant dwarven faces looking up at them, so Miiya’s lip-biting had to be internal. Is he okay? She wanted to ask. Actually, she wanted to be back in the room. This was neat and all, they were getting unpronounceable nicknames, dragon swag, but she’d barely had a lucid moment together with--whaaaaa--!!?

It had been mentioned at the start of the fest last… night? But Miiya had barely been present then, and pretty preoccupied since. At the Sergeant’s words, the Aeros girl felt her insides clench up tighter than they had when she’d first heard mention of a prosthesis-maker in Shaarn. Just as then, she sought out Tom’s hand for reassurance.

The speeches were over, and just like every pause in them, this seemed to be a signal for celebration. The thronging dwarves swept them from their erstwhile podium. Miiya was surrounded by a sea of them--as was Tom-Cat--and the crowd was pushing them apart as more piled in to congratulate, laud, and thrust food and drink upon them. Miiya would have surged against this tide to reach Tom, but--truth be told--she was feeling more than a little shocked and nerveless.

She would fly again.

But it would be on a prosthesis.

Would it hurt?

Would it feel right?

Song was really gone.

To be replaced soon--if the babble of voices around her was to be believed.

Numbly, Miiya allowed herself to sink into a chair and accepted food, but no spirits. She wasn’t sure if she could keep a smile pasted up on her face, and she was pretty certain that her brimming eyes were soon to overspill. So to cover all that up, she ate fantastic cuisine from the kitchen, without tasting a morsel. Avonox had warned that she would be more susceptible to poisons and alcohol, so--given a choice in the matter--Miiya did not imbibe. She wouldn’t have wanted to, regardless.

Some of the ZyrrKrr who had gone to Winklestith’s office were now expounding on the details they had learned. Miiya, numb as she was, picked out every word and turned them over in her mind.

The prosthesis would be permanent. A top-tier chirgen was being called in to ensure it bonded to her nerves and bones. Miiya had, in the few quiet spaces since that fateful night on Kiana’s beach, held out a remote hope that there was medicine or magick which might regrow the lost wingtip, restore it so that her pair of wings would be whole and unmarred. That hope was dying even as the sky seemed closer. The Aeros girl felt a sensation akin to being deep in the oppressive thick air of the Underneath. It was a little hard to breathe, and she really wanted Tom…

Stop it.

You are a big girl. You can yfretting handle this. She squeezed out the tears that looked like they came from joy, and smiled at yet another well-wisher patting (a pat for a dwarf, a hammer blow to Miiya) her on the back. Taking a deep breath, she looked around. She didn’t see Tom, but she did see a lot of people who were giving her a priceless gift, a lot of good food, and a safe place to be. Like a switchman on a disused railroad, it took a herculean effort to derail her spiral into depression. But Miiya had overflown oceans. She could manage to sit at a feast in her honor, eat, and be happy.

Right?

TOM CAT

A Felonious Feline

╺ ✽ ╸

“He didn’t pick her; you don’t choose who you fall in love with any more than you choose the shape of your bones.”

– C.J. Carlyon

[OOC: from the Hotel de Glace – the Halari Suite]

Unfortunately, the reserve of endorphins that Tom-Cat had built up during their criminally short amount of time alone together in the Halari Suite, was quickly depleted as the ZyrrKrr made speeches, called for speeches to be made by their “guest(s) of honor”, and took every opportunity to toast one another, drink more, and grow progressively drunker.  That in itself wasn’t the problem—not really.  Tom-Cat couldn’t and wouldn’t fault anyone for celebrating the death of Graekokorheyurgardramyr, the pathetic wingless wonder himself.

The catling was still somewhat surprised that the little bearded drunkards had even managed to pull it off, his and Miiya’s help, notwithstanding.  Of course, such a victory couldn’t happen without loss, and although he never knew him, Tom-Cat nonetheless raised his mug of honeyed mead in honor of the late Captain Rockjaw. He joined in on the toasts to honor the rest of the fallen ZyrrKrr, but as the speeches droned on, anyone who knew him could see that something was greatly bothering the catboy.

Outwardly, he stood next to Miiya and held her hand when she reached for it, allowing her to use him as a rock upon which to anchor herself as she was confronted with the news that her wing was to be fixed.  Although he pasted a wide, bright smile onto his face, it never reached his eyes.  Maybe it was difficult to tell, because the longer Tom-Cat stood there, the less and less he met anyone’s gaze—even Miiya’s.  He refused to look at her or anyone else, his attention increasingly turned inwards as his ears progressively flattened and he wrapped his tail tightly around his thigh in an unconscious, self-soothing gesture.  By the time the crowd had surged forward and carried the pair away from one another, it took him considerable effort to keep from immediately snarling and lashing out everyone who touched him.

Because Tom-Cat wanted none of it.  He didn’t want their accolades.  He didn’t want their recognition.  He didn’t want to be lauded as a damned “hero”.  He really  didn’t want the title of “Dragon Eye”, because each time he recalled the feeling of his claws sunk deep into the stinking wyrm’s eye, white-hot pain lanced through his chest.  He didn’t care about being their stupid guest of honor at their stupid feast, and not just due to the fact that it was increasingly obvious to him that the catling was essentially an afterthought—the entirety of the ZyrrKrr’s attention was mainly focused on Miiya and her wing, and that was fine.  He actually preferred to not be the center of attention.

No, Tom-Cat didn’t want the accolades and praise that the ZyrrKrr were giving him, because none of it—none of what he’d done—was for them.  He didn’t take Graekokorheyurgardramyr’s eye for them.  He didn’t confront the titanic dragon by himself, and didn’t make the jookan one-eyed, wingless wyrm flinch, for them.  He didn’t die for themNone of it had been for recognition or acclaim or honor.  None of it had been for them.

It had all been for her.

He’d taken Graekokorheyurgardramyr’s eye for her.

He’d confronted the dragon on his own and made the one-eyed, wingless wyrm flinch, for her.

He’d died for her.

And now the ZyrrKrr had made it about something else, entirely.

They had made it about glory or honor or whatever the bearded little budalls  were loudly going on about.  And Tom-Cat didn’t know how to handle it.  He didn’t know how to explain that he didn’t want any of it, any of this, without coming across as an ungrateful little snot.  He didn’t know how to say that none of what he’d done was for them, that he didn’t want it to be seen as such, without it being seen as spitting on the memories of Captain Rockjaw and the rest of the ZyrrKrr warriors who’d been lost in the attack.

He didn’t want to potentially sour the arrangement that had been made with Winklestith; he wouldn’t allow his own hangups, his own hurt, to prevent Miiya from regaining the sky—not when it was so close within their her grasp.

He wouldn’t cause her to lose the sky.

So Tom-Cat swallowed his pain, his anger, for her.  He could do this for her.  He would do this for her.  When someone smacked him on the back and referred to him as "Dragon Eye," he was somehow able to resist flinching, figuring out a way to deal with the sharp flash of agony as the memory tore through him like the dragon’s claw had torn through his chest.  When Miiya looked at him, he managed to make his answering smile reach his eyes, if barely.

Because she was happy—why shouldn’t she be? Tom-Cat didn’t want to bring down her good mood with his own stomach-clenching…anger? Sadness? Emptiness? He didn’t even know. What he did know was that he didn’t want her feeling his low mood through the bond, and so, even though it pained him to do so, with some effort he shut himself off from their connection.  Even though it was only temporary and to prevent his negativity from leaking through to her, it hurt.

He suddenly needed to get out of there and get some fresh air.  Besides, he—they?—had business to take care of and he’d rather get it done before it got too late.  The catling had half a mind to take her with him, but she looked so…so jookan happy.  He didn’t want to take her away from that.  Plus, he didn't want to drag her away from what she was doing—which was eating—because he didn't see any end to the food in sight. (Also and perhaps a bit selfishly, he really—really—liked how she had filled out and wouldn't mind seeing how she looked with a few more pounds put upon her.)

It wasn’t too difficult to slip away from the ZyrrKrr that had surrounded him and was only slightly harder to draw the Aeros aside for a moment, but he managed it.  Tom-Cat slid his arms around Miiya’s waist and drew her against him, sighing a little as he leaned down and thoroughly scent-marked her.  His tail absently slipped under her skirt and wrapped around her thigh, the furry tip teasing as it restlessly twitched back and forth.  Uncaring that they were surrounded by people, Tom-Cat tilted her chin up and kissed her, helplessly pouring everything he had into it as he unconsciously opened himself to the bond, once more.  He couldn't help it—the bond and every molecule within him called for him to hide her away, den up with her, and reconnect with his mate.

He briefly rested his forehead against hers and closed his eyes.  I wish I could take you back to the rrroom and hide away with you forrr at least a week, Teleskela,” he muttered.  “We’d neverrr have to leave—we could orrrderrr rrroom serrrvice and prrretend the rrrest of the worrrld doesn't exist.”  Tom-Cat rubbed his fuzzy ear against her throat and, with some effort, forced himself to step away, unwinding his tail from around Miiya’s leg.   The catling managed to paint a grin onto  his face and make it extend to his eyes as he looked down at her.

Listen, I’ve got some business to take carrre of,” he said.  “Forrr us,” he added. “I’m going to find a contact and fence the loot from Kiana.”   The catling shrugged.  “I’ll be back beforrre you know it, alrrright Teleskela?”

There was a sudden surge in activity around them and Tom-Cat didn’t wait around for Miiya’s answer as he slipped off into the crowd, silently promising her that he would return as soon as possible.

The catling briefly returned to their suite to pack up the loot that was to be fenced, and grabbed a few more things which he brought with him down to the front desk.  He made a few arrangements and sent off a note to be delivered via courier, before ordering a carriage to take him to Cathouse Corridor in Shaarn Nalos.

Miiya

The Aeros girl was certainly enjoying the attention being lavished upon her, though more by Tom-Cat and less from the furry-faces. Miiya thought she was starting to get used to how Tom came on strong almost each and every time. She was beginning to realize that it was simply a part of his nature, his confidence, to do so. It was such a juxtaposition to her own timidity.

I mean, I’m not, really. I’m a Storm Dancer. I kick rat faces and eat dragons (I guess). Well, if not timid, she was just not so sure of herself as the catboy. Like this skirt, for instance. Miiya’s wardrobe had always been small and what it contained was universally dowdy and frumpy. In Daelows Sen had dressed her in what they could afford--and what she judged appropriate. The year on the road with Cahron had seen Miiya in some pretty garish--and often way-more-revealing--costumes. That was what they had been, though; costumes. She put them on and became someone else for an hour, or for the day at the market, or for the duration of the performance. Right now she was just Miiya, and Miiya wasn’t sure just exactly how that girl dressed, or acted, or anything, really. Well, she liked getting… uh… and cuddled. She also liked food a lot. And no, she wanted to go with Tom. Did she not give that impression?

Certainly, Miiya was happy with being fed, and more than a little distracted by the de Glace’s spread. She had returned to the long “buffet” more times than she could count, and she had taken huge portions of everything, even snatching a couple of rolls from a tray one of the hotel kitchen staff were taking away because they were “too old.”

Too old! What did that mean? There was no way they had possibly baked it earlier than yesterday. Bread was good for weeks! Months if you toasted it and scraped off the mold occasionally.

So, even if she was unsure about her upcoming surgery, and even if Tom was alternately affectionate and then kinda distant and troubled and weird, Miiya was having a good time. She couldn’t not have a good time when there was an all-yew-kin-eat buffet. In her book, that was the primary definition of “good time.”

But, still, no! She would not be okay here by herself while Tom went to go do something that wasn’t eating. I mean, maybe… Even though a goodly percentage of the dwarves were passed out from drink, she still had to shout to be heard over the general hubbub. “Wait, just a minute!” Miiya exclaimed, distracted from Tom for an instant. “Tom! Tom!” Miiya grabbed behind her, attention fixed--as it was every time they emerged--the waitstaff bearing several deserts to the buffet. “Cake, flan AND pudding!? What even the heck!!” She couldn’t help the look of delight that had overspread her features as she turned to…

…a very bristly-mustachioed Dwarf who’s arm she had grabbed. “THA’S NICE, YOUNGSTER! G’WAN AND ‘AVE YERSELF A DUZEN SLICES!” The dwarf bellowed, giving her an encouraging pat on the back, that sent her stumbling toward the buffet. Miiya caught herself and looked back, but only espied bristlestache giving her a thumbs up from behind a rapidly-upending tankard. Feeling about as right about it as her erstwhile boyfriend, Miiya turned back to the desserts with only-slightly-tempered enthusiasm.

Tom was fine. She was fine. He just needed a little time, or space, or he didn’t--CAKE. Focus on the cake.

Plumbert L. Gardensorrel

From: The Winklestith Institute

Plumbert walked wonderingly through the lobby of the Hotel de Glace. This was the first ZyrrKrr celebration--or at least the aftermath of one--he had ever seen. From the look of things, he was going to have some difficulty in finding a Dwarf sober enough, or even conscious, to point him to where he might find the Aeros girl.

As it turned out, he could have saved his fretting. In the midst of a crowd of surging, drinking, shouting dwarves, Miiya stuck out like a lighthouse in a stocky bushy-bearded sea. Doing his best to slip between revelers without receiving too many elbow jabs or having his feet stomped upon, Plumbert made his way to Miiya. “Hello! I am Plumbert L. Gardensorrel; Baron Winklestith’s assistant. I’ve come to collect yew for your surgery.” He introduced himself.

Miiya

It had been a morning--she thought it was morning, maybe midday?--of food richer than anything she’d tasted, even including the impressive hafling feasts at the Crosswaters. That had been hearty and endless fare, but not nearly so fancy as what the du Glace kitchen continued to turn out. Miiya would have been in heaven, but for the company. Well, lack of company, really. The dwarves were great fun, especially with prodigious amounts of drink in them. They were friendly and--if a bit rough--welcoming to her.

But Tom-Cat was not here, and she felt his departure much more sharply than she imagined. Even with cake. Even with flan. Even with pudding and ribs, and crepes, and omelets, truffle, lobster, and the endless stream of gourmet creations issuing from the kitchen. Along with Tom-Cat, Miiya found that her appetite had, likewise, departed. Well, sorta. I mean, I can eat

The appearance of a gnome was sort of a surprise. Smaller than most of the dwarves, Plumbert caught Miiya’s attention before he made his introduction.

I’m Miiya!” The Aeros girl replied and then paled a little at the news Plumbert delivered. “Now?” She bit her lip as the gnome repeated his master’s words. The cirgen was coming, the wing was ready and the surgery must happen as soon as possible. “Can we wait until my…” She paused. Boyfriend sounded stupid and childish, right? But Tom still had her Tipsu. Doesn’t that make him my m--Can we wait until Tom comes back?”

Plumbert

The gnome felt a sudden rush of relief. Oh good, she has someone. When they didn’t--when they were an orphan--it was a lot harder to lead them to the institute. Plumbert shook his head. “We can’t--preparing you for the operation will take time. We will leave word here, and I will make sure that… Tom… is present before we begin. Is that acceptable?”

Miiya

“I-I guess so.” The young Aeros was nonplussed at this rando who just showed up and was insisting on dragging her away from the party, Tom, and all the friendly faces. Further, she was not feeling any more reassured about the surgery for the rush Plumbert seemed to be in.

Then again, Plumbert was a gnome. Miiya had good experiences with gnomes, for the most part. She was feeling full and safe and impressed by her spectacular surroundings. She REALLY did want to fly again, and she got the impression that the Draegloleth’s Claw was a priceless artifact. That meant her wing would be worth just as much. This was something that she could never have afforded on her own.

So, get happy. You’re safe. You’re full. Tom is coming back to be with you. You’re okay.

Miiya took a breath, thank-scused herself from the dwarves who were present and still sober enough to be on their feet (there were not many), and followed Mister Gardensorrel.

TOM CAT

A Felonious Feline

╺ ✽ ╸

“In order to realize the worth of the anchor we need to feel the stress of the storm.”

–  Corrie Ten Boom

[OOC: from the Healing Spa & Bath House]

Tom-Cat was not  a happy feline.  The hotel staff shrank back from the angry catling as he hissed and spit at everyone within sight.  “You let herrr go alone??” he snarled, unable to help the low growl that thrummed in his chest.  “Without even a change of clothes? What’s wrrrong with you?”

When one of the ZzyrKrr came up to try and calm him down, Tom-Cat whirled on them with claws out, hissing.  His heart was beating too-fast in his chest as he fought back a wave of panic.

She was all alone.

He wasn’t there.

He’d failed her.  Again.

The Dwarven warriors saw the wild-eyed look in the catling’s kohl-rimmed eyes and sought to calm him.  “Whoa, whoa, young’un,” the ZzyrKrr who had come up to him said, holding his hands up in a placating gesture.  “Th’Baron’s own assistant came fer her and said that he’d leave word fer ye and they wouldn’t start nuthin’ till you got there.  Okay?

Tom-Cat was not  okay.  He didn’t like how fast all of this was moving and he instantly didn’t trust this ‘Baron’ —it didn't matter if he was giving Miiya back her sky or not.  There was something weird with how fast all of this was moving, but he held his tongue for now.  Instead, he just nodded.  The ZzyrKrr clapped him on the shoulder.

Okay lad, why dontchya drop off yer gear in yer room and get yew and yer lass some clothes fer the next couple ‘ave days.  Then we’ll take ye to th’Institute and ye kin put eyes on ‘er yerself,” he suggested.

It wasn’t like Tom-Cat had much of a choice.

As he went about gathering up an overnight bag for both himself and Miiya, the catboy tried to shake the trapped animal feeling that had settled over him.  He still hadn’t managed to shake it by the time he met the ZzyrKrr down in the De Glace lobby.

Without another word, they departed for the Institute.
