The Skies Above The Mountains Ethereal
The Skies Above the Mountains Ethereal
An occasional high-flying Aeros or great albatross can be seen riding the rarified and frozen airs high above Aerie's mountains. Strong updrafts from the craggy peaks can lift such high-fliers to great altitude, or spill the air from their wings and send them plummeting down to the mountain peaks. It is a cold and treacherous sky above the mountains

Miiya was having trouble maintaining her resolve. She had flown in storms before, but never anything like the tempest that now raged above The Mountains Ethereal. Everything was a confusion of grey, dark and darker shadows, and driving icy snow. She could not be sure which way was up, and only by tasting the sky; breathing deeply through her sinus and feeling the pressure in her ethmoid air cells, could she sense that they were still ascending, though much slower than before.
She could see ice riming Avonox's feathers with each downbeat. They were high in the storm now and the violence of the air currents had diminished. Now, the threat was the hypoxia and hypothermia that came from flying a such altitudes. Miiya could feel her own breath, quick shallow and rapid, like her heartbeat. She could not imagine Avonox, with sodden wings and carrying her, could fly much higher or much longer.
Then, suddenly, the clouds lightened and fell away as they soared into clear air. It was a surreal landscape. Rather than the puffy cumulus of lower altitudes or the churning nimbostratus of mountain stormclouds, the world was blue above with long grey-and-white streaks and shadows around them. They were in the polar jet, and it had whipped the tops of the towering stormclouds into long streaming anvils. Miiya opened her wings at last and felt the bite of the frigid air through her feathers. Avonox released her and she fell like a stone. After a brief eep! of suprise, she adjusted and caught the air. They were high. As high as she had ever been. Just maintaining altitude in the thin air meant wingbeats like those of a steep climb. She adjusted her mask and goggles before looking back at her father, who was holding formation with her. Turn back. Descend. He signaled.
Avonox looked like death. He was coated in ice and snow. Even unburdened he was still flapping for altitude for all he was worth. His skin was pale and his eyes were rimmed with red. Miiya wondered how he had managed to carry her so high with iced and sodden wings. Could she really do this?
I can. She signaled. Goodbye. She beat for more altitude without looking back.
