The Outskirts of Town

Cultivated fields separated by hedgerows surround the Hafling town. Walking around the village might lead one to wonder just how many turnips and cabbages a city of Haflings could possibly consume.

Small copses of trees dot the land and a few streams run through weed-choked ditches.

The TonDen

From: Tobold's Hollow

The torch-bearing Hafling patrols were easy to avoid, and the TonDen emerged from the thicket, bearing its two riders, shortly after one had passed. It strode across the open fields, making a straight and steady beeline for Kiana.

Miiya

From: The Hollow

"Wait! Slow down, Mister TonDen! There may be Hafers about who aren't as obvious as The Guard!" Miiya warned in a whisper.

"I-I can fly and reconnoiter…" Miiya suggested hesitantly. Night flights were always dangerous, and her broken wingtip, besides making flight painful, meant she'd have less control on landing and takeoff. She couldn't hover until it healed, and her landing  stall speed was a flat-out run.

Still, if they were discovered by Haflings, none of that would matter. "Actually, can yew run a bit faster?" She requested, pressing her hands upon the shoulders of the TonDen.

If the golem increased it's speed, she would unfold her wings and catch the slipstream. She crouched, steeled herself, and sprang into the air. It was all she could do not to cry out. Flying on a broken wing HURT! Every wingbeat sent firey lances of pain jagging into her shoulder. Still, she swooped low over the dark form of the TonDen, calling softly to her compatriots, "I'll climb higher and see if I can spy Kiana!" Her voice was low and tight from the hurt. The wind of her flight whipped the tears from her eyes.

Miiya beat for altitude, feeling a little light-headed. As she cleared the hedgerows and treetops, she caught sight of the candle-lit windows of Kiana. "There's the town!" She hissed to herself. "Now, where…?"

A spill of light from an opened doorway caught her eye. A tall figure emerged, followed by a shorter one. Miiya's keen eyesight picked out their individual features, though her night vision was no better than a Uman's. She saw a long braid, possibly blue, in the torchlight from inside. "Vjerdt…?!" She breathed to herself, fighting against the pain to keep her vision from swimming. It must be him! It had to be!

Suddenly, the taller figure turned on the shorter, attacking him. "Oh no!" Miiya cried. She folded her wings and dove. Heedless of who might hear, she shouted to the darkened ground below. "Mister TonDen! Vjerdt is in trouble! Follow me! Fifteen degrees left of the moon!" She shouted a bearing as Aeros measured direction, not thinking that grounders might not understand her directions.

Miiya pulled out of her dive, translating altitude into speed, her broken carpal flexing with vicious pain. She bit down on her lip to keep from crying out, and beat hard for town.

Zhaetar

From: Tobold's Hollow

Zhaetar held on for dear life as the TonDen burst out of the coppice of thorny trees and galloped across the moors and farmland beneath the darkened night’s sky. The dwarf was not a good rider, and despite her best efforts to grip the construct tightly she found herself bouncing up and down on it’s crystal-armored carapace in a way certain to leave her backside aching the next morning. She did her best to keep an eye out for any of the Home Guard patrols, and spied torchlight dancing in the distance that may have been the armed haffers, or may have been farm folk checking on their livestock. Her night’s sight was very keen, and she spied what looked to be a roadhouse looming over a fallow cornfield.

Miiya’s demeanor seemed hysterical at first, and Zhaetar was shocked as she took flight.

“Ach! Where yew goin missy?” The she-dwarf watched wide-eyed as the Aeros circled upwards, and the mix of the wild ride and sight of flight sent her stomach churning. She bit her lip and swallowed down a gurgling reflex, speaking urgently to the TonDen. “My friend, keep to the shadows ahead, there’s some kind o’ tavern up there.”

She heard the Aeros’ sudden shout, realizing that she was speaking of the gnome she’d mentioned. Regardless, trouble was coming. Gripping the golem as tight as she could with her thighs, she pulled her bow free and knocked an arrow, though even her deadeye skills would be hard pressed on such a bumpy ride.

"Left a smidge!" She urged the TonDen, instinctively squeezing her legs tight and leaning to the left, keeping an eye on the sliver of the crescent moon.

The TonDen

The construct was fast, but not nearly as fast as one on the wing. It kept up a steady pace in the direction indicated by Zhaetar.
