                                                        Zarah

A lone tall figure in a heavy hooded gray cloak walked alone through the middle of the Greater Falcon Forest at a steady pace.   The traveler walked with purpose, and was sure-footed in the dense forest, seemingly familiar with the area.

"Come along, Moon, we need to get to the base of the mountains before nightfall, and then make camp."    There was a rustling in the trees just above the traveler's head.    "Yes, I know, Moon.  'Tis getting colder, and perhaps not the best time of year to be headed to Sharnn across the mountains.   But we've been in colder places, yew and I."   the hooded figure laughed softly, almost melodiously. "Come sit on my shoulder if ye need to warm yer feet."

On cue, there was a swooshing of air, a great fluttering of wings, and the arrival of a very large gray owl, who gently landed on the padded shoulder of the solitary explorer.   "Ah, there yew are, Moon."     Zarah reached over and smoothed the feathers of the great owl.

He was her best friend and companion since he was a fledgling and she had saved him from certain death after his nest had been raided by a scavenger looking for a quick meal.   She had set him free once he'd healed and fully fledged, but the great owl would not leave his benefactor.   They could communicate in some way that neither fully understood.

And Moon accepted her despite her half-breed heritage; a dryad mother, and an adventurer father she'd never met who she purportedly resembled.  She was told she had his white hair, and golden eyes.    She must have inherited his penchant for adventure as well, for she was now on her own, no longer able to live among the dryads.   She wasn't one of them; as a half-breed she would never fit in, though they'd treated her well.   She had been sheltered, but now she must learn the way of the Worlde, her time with the dryads done.

Now Zarah was on a path of discovery of the Greater Worlde, as well as the hope of learning more about her Father.    She and Moon were headed to the town of Sharnn, home of the great craftsmen, dwarves, elves, gnomes and others.  It was a perfect place to begin learning about the other races.

Having reached the base of the mountains, and with waning light, Zarah stopped to gather loose branches and dried and charred bits of wood scattered about in a clearing.   It appeared there had been previous campfires, their remnants left by other travelers likely headed to Sharnn.

"I'll have supper ready soon."  She spoke to the owl, who simply blinked and watched her go about her chores from the vantage point of a low branch nearby.   He had no need for her to feed him, of course, being perfectly able to catch his own dinner, but Zarah had a habit of giving him a taste of whatever she happened to have herself.   It was a quiet ritual that both enjoyed.   Moon was good company for the solitary traveler.

Once she had a warming fire going, she looked into her traveling kit to see what was left of the stores she'd packed away for this journey.   "Ahhhh..."  she spoke aloud, "It seems our jerky is running low.  At first light we'll need to hunt, old friend, and roast a fair supply to get us over the mountains."   She pulled the last of the jerky out and called her companion down from his perch to share in their evening meal before getting some sleep.   They would need their rest to hunt tomorrow, replenish their stores, and ultimately begin the arduous climb to the far side of the mountain.
