The Khybrien

The odd man… was he a man? He said some very odd things.

He moved forward, into the mass. The fellow’s large feet smashed more.  It did not take very long for him to be in the midst of the mass; he laughed and brayed and generally made more noise than was natural.

”Yes! Yes my new friends! We are nearly at the Gate. We kill the little ones…”

From the way they had come the trees rustled and shook. Into the clearing at the end of the path, between them and the way they had come… was a chelicae. This one had the same black and shiny shell, the same dark claws… and massive compound eyes.

They glared balefully about and it lumbered forward, the bulk of the creature shouldered the horse out of the way and bore down on the knot of defenders.

”Kill the little ones. Draw out the big one.”

Talan hated insects, ever since he could remember. His mother passed and he was thrown out on the streets by the Landlord, and he had encountered cockroaches and spiders and beetles. He hated them.

He threw his hand out and fire arced unchecked towards the Chelicae.  Talan’s control was sketchy at best, the fire rolled over the tough shell and the thing barely slowed. Raith had recovered himself after being barged past and was to the creature’s rear, it was between him and his mistress.  Tala stood calmly and swapped jewels to one that was as black as night.  She had faced giant bugs before, down in her father’s realm.  The black arrow appeared, as she fired, it solidified into a murderously sharp piece of obsidian that winged its way towards the Chelicae.

The Khybrien

Life, even this Dream-tinged affair, was precious and vibrant. Such colour!

Black glowy arrows.

Sharpish silvery stone edges on the dark-stained wooden sword club.

Grey fur on the Old Suspicious Wolf.

Crimson blood from a thousand little bites among the blue, green and yellow tattoos on The Khybrien’s arms.

Brilliant blue and green and gold feathers that decorated his cloak.

All were beautiful.

Not as beautiful and fascinating as the massive blue-purple-black giant… whatever it was.  Its claws snapped and its barbed tail lashed out.

It had just reached the edge of the burning fan of fire, the swinging edged stone club and gnashing teeth… when the arrow, laden with black glowing energies slammed into what appeared to be its head.

It was like hitting it with a bartering ram…

Tala was sure of the strike and watched with grim satisfaction as the large ‘Chelicae’s’ head exploded in a nasty shower of green gooey muck.  She gave a wry smile and lowered the bow.

”No worth mucking about with it…it is done, dead.” She said coolly.

Talan wiped a large glob of green gunk from his arm and from his hair.

”You could have bloody warned me it’s head was gonna explode!” He said testily.

Raith whickered in amusement from behind the shiny body.

Even Hawkeye’s tongue lolled from the side of his mouth, finding the situation quite funny.

Dead…???

The corpse… or was it?

It slowed to a halt as what looked like its head smoldered: a few tendrils of smoke rose.

As the little party turned to face the avenue among the trees and the sigil laden door that lay at the end…

The body lurched forward, trampling the Khybrien and the fire wizard and the girl all at once.

”Oof!” The Khybrien exhaled, losing his balance. “Burn it…”

The stingered tail lashed about, bumping against the demon horse and the Khybrien and the old Wolf… it seemed less than conscious in its attack, though, more or less wildly flailing about…

Reflex?  Maybe… it still was dangerous.

Talan rolled as the thing lumbered across them and summoned the fire, fear drove him, hate drove him, and the flame sprung forth in a torrent of heat at the Chelicae, engulfing it in a wave of fire.

Raith reared and blocked his mistress from the heat, being a NightStallion he was not bothered by it. Hawkeye crouched low and remained by Talan.

There was lots of popping and crackling as the shell of the great creature was breached, it fell forward, it’s sting lashing about feebly.

The Khybrien

“HA!” He leapt to his feet and shook both his head and his weapon and arms free of the charred fire.

”Well done!” He clapped the lad on his back, probably hard enough to knock him back down, but he caught the lad before he could get off balance too much.

”Fire, nothing cleanses like fire.  The Mother doesn’t care for fire usually… but when all is disease it is needful.”

He turned to kick the claw and then he grinned at them all, “All are well? Demon Horse? Underworld Girl? Old Wolf? Fire lad? Very nicely handled. When the ash is cleaned off, we shall go onward!”

Tala brushed some ash from her clothes and turned to check Raith. The NightStallion had absorbed the heat with little care, he had been through worse.

”We are well Painted Man.” She said calmly.

She ran her fingers through her long ebony locks and shook off some more ash. Raith nudged her protectively.

Hawkeye stiffly found his feet and shook himself sending a cloud of charred Chelicae in different direction and gave a low growl.  Talan stood there staring at the smouldering remains and finally he gave a wry grin.

”I am good…can’t be said about that thing though….did you see it Tala….burned it up, charred it like toast!”

Tala clapped sarcastically and Raith threw his head up and down.

”Well done Fire Boy…..” She drawled.

”Shall we move on?”

The Khybrien

The tall figure, somewhat scorched and scratched, turned slowly to look around. The Outer Guardian was dead. Good.

Now, the challenging part: the door.

The Khybrien’s pace brought him down the flagstones to the closed end of the path among the trees.

”The door is without lock, but there is a way to open.”

He began to prepare a ritual chant, pausing to trace various symbols on the metal of a small bowl that he produced from somewhere.

”Hair of night,” he plucked one of the girl’s hairs, it vanished into the bits of other stuff he gathered  “Tear of the Protector,” he swiped across his eye and flung the moisture into the dish, he took the hand of the young man and held his fingers over the bowl  “one ingredient left; blood of virgin.” He looked pointedly at Talan.

Talan glared.

”Fine take it but I ain’t a Virgin!” He rumbled.

Hawkeye gave a soft bark and Raith snickered. Tala smirked and raised her eyebrows.

”So you are pure still Fireboy.” She mused.

”Not been with a woman or any other!”

Talan turned red and flinched as the odd man cut his hand.

The Khybrien

As usual, his instinct was correct. Process of elimination, of course. He himself had practically been ‘made’ to be experienced, but he was nonetheless. His blood was potent, but not for this spell.  The old wolf had to have whelped some pups at some point… the demon horse didn’t really count because it was a conjured thing and didn’t have useful blood… for this spell. Other spells, maybe.

The girl, well, look at her? There wasn’t much chance she was in that category; the truly beautiful ones weren’t that very often.

The alien priest-mage continued his work: he walked up to the iron door and began.  He used his thumb and the mixture traced through the scrollwork on what he said was a ‘door’. Or a Gate…

Talan muttered and grumbled as the odd man did his work on the door.

”Ain’t a virgin! I have done it loads of times!”

Hawkeye came to his side and licked his hand consolingly as Raith continued to whicker with much amusement.

”Virgin….hah…..he can’t even do that!” The horse drawled in Tala’s mind.

Tala mused a wry smile.

”Now now Raith don’t be cruel, he probably just hasn’t met the right person yet, though odd that a handsome lad like him hasn’t.” She retorted.

Raith nudged Tala and whickered again.

”Maybe he doesn’t know what to do with it!”

The Khybrien

The man figure shook his head, the long and thick crawling hair that seemed much like serpents along his scalp.

The long tattooed fingers traced the inset runes and they began to glow - softly at first, then brighter. There was a single note, high and clear. It rang out in the silence, pure of tone.

”New Friends; the Door is open”. It oddly did not look open, but The Khybrien’s fingers did seem to flow through its surface.

”I will hold the door open. We must go within.”

Tala went first, unfraid, head held high, followed by Raith, who seemed to shrink to fit the door and follow his mistress. Hawkeye gave a soft gruff and trotted in after what he knew was a horse but not.
Talan stood and regarded the door more warily.

”What is in there? More biting tentacles? More bloody beetle things?” He said quite sharply.

He was tired, using the fire as frequently as he had, drained him, made him feel bad tempered and scratchy.

                                        **************

Out in the dark of the surrounding forest, close but not too close, Shadow watched with interested eyes at the battles fought and won.  The odd man was something indeed, not to be trifled with, the girl, again quite a beautiful and powerful thing but not to be meddled with…yet.  The boy though, he was the one, full of doubt, suspicion, he would fall.  Inarion’s trigger had been his family, for the Uman it was himself. Time to weave his spell……a new body was coming his way.

The Doorway

The curtain fell as though it was an oncoming storm. In its place was the old metal door. Inside the path continued, bluish lights lining its length.

The Khybrien followed.

The atmosphere inside the mound was strange and spectral. The sound was muffled, and everyone was oddly subdued.

The path went on and the party paused, looking up at the strange wall of bluish light before them…
