Behind a barrier of coruscating energy lies a pool at the heart of the Rosewood. The trees 🌳 of the Rosewood crowd up to its edge, save for a small rocky outcrop.

Of old, there was a Guardian, now the approach is warded by a dark-edged light in a bubble around the waters.

Duilliath

True to memory, the going became quite challenging for hoofs, while Duilliath had predicted that the ground would become favorable, he did swing up on Marigold for a bit, mainly to be closer to the Golden Girl.

They struck out east, moving under ancient boles, wending their way along paths that weren’t much traveled.  The Sidhe noted that the broken ground seemed to be in a sinuous line, he could not discern how it came to be broken. It was as if a great rope had been dropped nearby and pushed the ground farther away.

Baoun was content to ride for a while, but even he wanted to stretch his legs.  Off he went, much to Galecord’s annoyance.

Quite suddenly, a tiny ripple seemed to pass underfoot; pushing the faintest of sounds as it passed.

Duilliath, Baoun and Agacea, sensitive to the actions of magery and wizardry, paused and looked back…

Some major sorcererous discharge has occurred… and from the feel of it, some ways to the south and a little east…

                                                                          Tainted Lands

There was clearly some thing wrong with these lands. Nothing grew right and the birds and animals passed through quickly to avoid lingering. She could tell Agacea sensed something. Galecord, swished her black tail sharply. She did not wish to linger here, either.

She heard the equine behind her snort and when she looked back, the mare's ears were flicking back and forth. Galecord could see a line of tension along the Sidhe's jaw. The gold one looked, well, gold. She was no expert in humans so she knew not what thoughts through the gold head, but at least she could be quiet.

They paused briefly so the foolish cat could take off to parts unknown. So soon the party thins.

Agacea, the Heirguardian

The Satyr flicked his brown eyed gaze back to Galecord and the Fool.  He shifted uneasily from hoof to hoof. “Was that…?” He trailed off not completing the thought.

He did not wish to conceive of the possibilities. A creature of such Darkness loose in the land… with the strange buzz of the barrier’s droning growing louder with each footfall.

Duilliath, Do you hear what I hear?

Duilliath listened for a moment, the old evil had come round again. There was no mistaking it, nor was it a coincidence.

The Sidhe spoke, “The source is far from here, I would put it at Four days hard ride… and it’s a very bad sign. Still, we can do nothing for it.” Nor could he do anything about the other disturbing change that he felt… the whine and drone of the Barrier was ever present and started to bleed into his awareness.  The vibration was starting to give him a headache.

That he was off his ‘feed’ was apparent to Galecord and Doré.

He seemed significantly better when Baoun jumped up into his arms. “We must go on.” He pressed his hand to Doré’s knee.

“I am beginning to understand the challenge ahead.”

Duilliath - All Together Now

The commotion to the South notwithstanding, the five of them turned toward the Discord and Disturbance that emanated from the East.  It was not many hours of walking over the strangely twisted and broken ground that brought them in view of The Barrier itself.  A great dome with multi-colored and black edged fires that played over its surface. Of course, it didn't look like a dome from the ground, but a massive wall of black glass.  Opaline fires played over its surface, green, cyan, orange and silver flames lit its almost liquid outer aspect.

This was an 'Edge', a particularly potent area of Sorcery.  This was where magics were at their strongest, the Boundaries between two states, two elements and two conditions.  The more obvious the barrier, the stronger the magic.  The more powerful the effects...

Duilliath regarded the black surface with eerily similar black eyes. This was Old Magic.  This might even be Sidhe Magic.

He walked closer to the barrier, the etheric currents emanating from it seemed to make Baoun's hair stand on end.  It did make the Sidhe's unbound strands rise up like a Gorgon's corona...

Agacea

The Heirguardian of the Twist Horns trailed behind the Walker Under the Eaves and approached to within a bow shot of it.  There was a high pitched whine against which he clamped his hands over his ears. “It’s worse than before!” He shouted. The Satyr seemed weak in the knees and almost dizzy. “60 summers ago it was only so at half this distance…”

Duilliath, Some Days Are Diamonds

The Sidhe gestured to Agacea to return to the place where Galecord and Doré waited.  Baoun was clearly uncomfortable, though he remained in the Sidhe’s arms as he continued to approach. If the sound bothered him, he gave no outward sign.

Among them, Doré seemed most unaffected by the presence of the Barrier, her hazel eyes tracked the Fool and The Cat.

Another quarter of the distance closer and Baoun leapt from his arms and shook his head.

Closer still, now alone, The Sidhe ventured.

Duilliath -

Some Days Are Rocks

The Sidhe moved forward, bending as if walking against a great wind. The resistance that emanated from the Wall of Dark Glass extended out to affect even him. His unbound hair spread up and around his head, pushed back in the unseen eldritch gale.

He was only a few steps away.

The Fires and The Fury grew to cyclone force, the Barrier began to glow oddly in two places - where his outstretched hands threatened to touch it…

The first flash from the wall was red in color, limned in violet. It arced out like a small horizontal bolt of lightning…

Baoun

The Not-Cat tried it could not move closer than half the distance to the Barrier. With his other senses, he was able to see the forces that swirled about The Fool.

The Barrier was reaching out to him, even as it tried to push him away.

Like two lodestones, they were doing both at once…

Stay or Go?

For a reason she could not comprehend, Duilliath, Baoun, Galecord, and Agacea had seemed to be both with her and far away. Entranced, she had continued forward, the sound of faerie wings in the wind chimed melodiously. She felt a great peacefulness as their party continued forward. The growing discomfort of those around her seemed like a far-off memory.

Then time rushed forward and the acute noise of those around her were so loud, she kicked her mare and Marigold plunged forward toward the barrier reluctantly. Doré dismounted from Marigold in surprise, giving the mare a brief, apologetic stroke on the neck.

Doré's skirts and hair flung by the winds apparently part of the red lightning sizzling and creating a heavy, faintly burnt scent in the air. The Sidhe and Baoun were going into the barrier, and she plunged ahead, grabbing the tail of Duilliath's wind-swept garment. One thought passed suddenly through her mind: was she stopping them or joining them?

Duilliath and Doré:

Some Doors Are Open

The Sidhe bent into a wind unseen and was reaching for The Barrier…

Reaching

He was aware that the ur-Cat has leapt down and rolled tumbling away.

Reaching

The end of his cloak, whipping in the unearthly gale suddenly snapped tight and taut, and his nostrils filled with the nearby scent of… Doré?

The red and violet lightning beckoned and reached for him…

Reaching

Like a long missed friend.

His vision and his Sight filled with red and purple and after the flash, he knew no more.

Baoun the Cat?

Baoun had tried to reach The Fool and he tried to reach The Barrier. Neither proved possible: his head buzzed from the strange waves that sloughed off the curving wall of Black Glass and Fire.

When the Golden One easily reached them, he saw that she had abandoned Marigold; he knew what he had to do. He would protect the steed, he wriggled out of Duilliath’s arm and hit the ground twisting and biting at the feeling of a thousand flies upon him.

Then he looked back: Duilliath and Doré vanished in a flash of red-violet light.
