The Signal Tree is a massive, dead pillar of wood in which there are many burrows and hideyholes.

A former World Tree relative, the Tree is a place of refuge…

The Jackdaw

(OOC: From Downriver of Straith)

The Jackdaw hopped, ran and fluttered his way through twisted paths in the undergrowth that were known to small creatures.

By the time he reached the hill where the Wood Pillar lay, he was exhausted and his beautiful plumage was coated with dust and debris from the forest floor.

He sat for a moment, listening. The bad things, the Bone Things, were far away. They were across the big stream and the little stream.

Painfully he dragged his tail across the last ground, he hopped on a few branches… he paused. So tired.

He started awake.

The bird was tired, so he’d fallen asleep.  Even more of the day was gone now.

He continued his slow climb, muttering to himself. In the Tree, he saw his destination: the little hiding place he’d made. It was good.

He looked inside, he saw and heard nothing. So he popped within.

The Jackdaw’s Hideout

a.k.a. Robbers Roost

The Jackdaw sat in his little den, none of his treasures were missing and the only intruder was a delicious grub and a dried up roly-poly.

His chest hurt.  His wings and his legs hurt. He was so very tired. He probably could have dropped the stone the River Lady gave him. He didn’t. It made him more sore for carrying it, but it seemed important.

The Jackdaw wanted to make sure he remembered: he took from his stash a bunch of his treasure and arranged it.

A clear marble, a broken pin and a lost button went in one column.  An arrowhead of stone with a chipped point and a bone from some unfortunate creature, with the darkest pebble he had went into the other.

These were all the people he knew. Good and bad.

There was something missing.

He dropped a garnet and a gold bead from someone’s lost necklace a little to the left in a little hollow in the knot formed by wood and bark.

Just outside he dropped a little black and white bean seed.

There.

That was right, there were the good people (even the three legged dog) and the bad things, but who were those others?

The Jackdaw in Robbers Roost:

At the Center of it All

The little bird lay his weary head under one wing, his beak by the River Lady’s gift. He fluffed his feathers and fell fast asleep.

Unseen by him, a little fluff of dark feather floated down and landed in the middle of the arrangement.

Right on top of a tiny bit of snakeskin.

The Jackdaw

The Jackdaw mumbled in his sleep. “Death…” and something that sounded like ‘fairies’ and slipped back into a restless slumber.

In his Dream:  Thieves were trying to take all his things, in his Dream he saw the Three-Legged Dog opening his jaws wide to close on him. His breath was awful…

Hawkeye had not stopped running since he had left the boy, the Signal Tree was nearest, hopefully that is where the stupid bird would go.  He would check on him first. He reached the tree and sat down panting heavily, he was not getting any younger.  He gave a sharp yap, hoping that would cause the bird to look out of whatever hole he was hiding in.  He truly hoped the skyrock had not flattened or burned the silly creature.  Deradith liked the Jackdaw and he did not want to tell her that she had lost another friend, that was if the River Lady had survived the arrow.

The Jackdaw

Oh no! Now the Three Legged Dog was taunting him with threats.

Some dreams are too frightening.

The little bird started awake, heart pounding as the teeth and breath faded away.

Now, he heard the barking again. He was still very tired, and very sore.

He moved to one of his windows and looked out blearily.

Hawkeye spotted him looking out, relief rushed over him, stupid bird was alive.

He stood on his hind legs and rested his front paws on the trunk.

”We need to check on Deradith.” He tried to say gently.

The Jackdaw

The bird tried to raise its wings. It was far too stiff and sore to fly right now.

“Can’t fly. Wings hurt. Bone Hat breathed into the Jackdaw. Weak.”

He did manage a controlled flutter to land in the wolf’s neck. “Can ride. Not fly.”

Hawkeye felt the bird land in his fur round about his neck and he took a breath.

”You can ride until you are fit to fly, you will need to hold on as I am going to run…can you do that.” He asked most courteously.

PUCK

Troublemaking Wood Nymph

╺ ✽ ╸

Puck wood nymph(WA)

Squawker, the most convenient form of communique in the Rosewood

Puck was bored.  And generally speaking, a bored wood nymph with the power of Probability Hexes, was not a good combination.  It could spell disaster in the form of an inexplicable forest fire.  Or, a stubbed toe. Wood nymphs after all, are known to be, if not fickle, then at least easily distract– What was this?

A little blue bird 🐦 flitted in through the entrance of one of the largest spaces in the Signal Tree that Puck was currently calling home.  She moved a lot - the neighborhoods in the Rosewood kept being gentrified with Wenders, and, now she didn’t mean to sound elitist here, but the plain fact of the matter is that death followed wherever the foul creatures went.  And all the mass genocide of all life in a given area really brought down the value.  The Wenders acted like they were fixing up and helping the places they moved into, but really it was quite the opposite.

No matter, Puck opened her hand and the tiny blue bird landed upon it.  She waved her hand for it to relay its message.

“P - I have a live 1- need a crib, cot & roof. U in?”

The green haired and green-eyed wood nymph would know the voice of the sender anyway.  “Greeeell, she mused, drawing out the name of her…intimate acquaintance, as she did so.  Hmm.  She hadn’t heard from him in awhile – she’d been too mad to answer his late night firefly text of, “U Up?” that he’d sent her a couple of weeks ago, but a couple weeks was like, forever, in wood nymph time, so she was well over it.

Plus, she was bored.  Whatever shenanigans Grell was embroiled with always proved to be entertaining (at least to her) and so she made her reply to the blue bird.

“G - Took u long enuf.  K, I’m in.  Where at? Drop a pinion feather 🪶  to let me know ur location & I be there shortly.  Laterz - c u soon!”

<3, P

Puck returned the blue bird 🐦 with a snap of her fingers (Jeez, what did people do before Squawker? She couldn’t imagine living without it!) and spread her wings, launching from the Signal Tree a moment later.  Once Grell let her know where he was, she would be there not long after.
